Need for Speed

When other people can barely drag themselves to the gym, Nick Frank, Bus Ad ’99, is pushing his body to the limit in Ironman triathlons.

Nick Frank
The super athlete recently swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 miles and ran 26.2 miles in the Ford Ironman U.S.A. Lake Placid Triathlon — and did it all in 10 hours and one minute. He placed fifth out of 156 in his division and 44th out of 2,169 overall, earning a coveted slot in the world championships in Hawaii this October.

A former member of Marquette’s track team, where he met his wife, Jen (Koenigsmark) Frank, H Sci ’98, Frank picked up swimming and biking two years ago after being inspired by a friend’s Ironman training. His first triathlon was last year.

“You learn a lot about yourself out there,” says Frank, who works as a Web developer for Wachovia in Charlotte, N.C. “You get to the point where you have some very negative thoughts running through your head, and you just want to stop and lay down in the grass. But there’s something inside of you that just tells you to keep on going. You feel a strong sense of pride because you didn’t give up when your body was telling you to give up.”
