Wiffle ball, leap frog, jumping rope. Who could guess that child’s play was exhausting. A dance titled “Recess” was featured in Matter Dance Company’s show Jump Start that opened to full houses at Chicago’s Lifeline Theatre. Adduci, Barreca and Hoversen spent months creating the show with dances inspired by moments in everyday life — the ideas for “Recess” came from thinking about what kids do on a playground. Their blog gave fans and friends a front-row seat to the excitement and anxiety of producing an original show.
July 13: “You should totally put up a dance show if you don’t want to be able to sleep due to random panic attacks.”
July 16: “As much as this is a bunch of work, and yes my personal life has taken the biggest hit … I am super excited.”
July 29: “Five months of rehearsals, meetings, planning and in two nights, it’s all over. The show was a huge success — we sold out completely both nights.”
The three met through Marquette’s Department of Performing Arts. After graduation they merged talents and founded Matter Dance Co. They’ve enlisted other talented performers, including Chad Hansing, Comm ’01, and Dustyn Martincich, Comm ’04. The one requirement of every cast member: a desire to bring extraordinary athleticism and high energy to dance. Jump Start was their first full-length show. Watch matterdance.com to see what’s next.
