A familiar face is dean
Cullinan has plans for College of Health Sciences
Sometimes you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for in your own backyard. That was the case this summer when Marquette named Dr. William Cullinan dean of the College of Health Sciences, replacing the retired Dr. Jack Brooks.
Cullinan joined the faculty in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in 1995, and since 2001 served as director of the Integrative Neuroscience Research Center. He earned a degree in physical therapy at Marquette in 1981. He later earned a doctorate in neuroscience at the University of Virginia (1991) and did a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Michigan from 1991-95.
Cullinan has a solid reputation for neuroscience research. He studies brain circuits that regulate hormonal stress responses critical to health. Students praise him, and in 2002 he won the university’s Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.
As dean, he has one goal. “We have the momentum and tools to make this the best college of its kind, anywhere,” he says. Cullinan highlights multiple points of pride: “Our college has two of Marquette’s top five majors (biomedical sciences and exercise science), and our physical therapy and physician assistant studies programs are ranked nationally in the top 40. We’ve also developed a critical mass of researchers in the neuroscience and neurorehabilitation areas who have garnered much external funding and have helped elevate Marquette’s position on the scientific landscape. Most importantly, we are advancing a culture of excellence that people associate with Marquette University.” — JMM
