Endowment honors Alan Kindler

And pays rowing coach, too

Marquete CrewCoach Alan Kindler, Comm ’96, inspired something in students and alumni that would make him smile.

Following Kindler’s death in 2004 from cancer, they established the Kindler Rowing Endowment to pay a stipend to a coach of the crew teams. They hoped to raise $25,000. The endowment passed that mark last year when gifts from 58 donors built the fund to $38,000. In the 2006-07 academic year Jim Peters, Arts ’02, served as the first Kindler Coach. This fall Ruth Blahnik, H Sci ’02, holds the post.

“Young crew alumni established the endowment,” says Michael Thometz, Bus Ad ’00, a rower from 1995-99. “We were inspired by Coach Kindler’s passion and dedication. He regularly checked out of the hospital at 5 a.m. to come and coach on the Milwaukee River.”

The Kindler Rowing Endowment provides an annual stipend of $2,500 to the head
rowing coaches for expenses and certification at U.S. rowing training facilities.
