Marquette Reads: Rev. John Naus, S.J.

Rev. John Naus, S.J., has been a Marquette institution for nearly 50 years. He's well-known for many things — his history as Tumbleweed the Clown, his famous Christmas cards, and his long tradition of concelebrating 10 p.m. Mass at St. Joan of Arc Chapel on Tuesdays. Father Naus also loves to share quotes and words of wisdom from some of his favorite books over the years. Here are seven books that top his list of favorites.

1. Nicomachean Ethics, chapters 8 and 9, by Aristotle. "Some of the best ideas I've ever read about friendship."

2. Ethics by Oliver A. Johnson and Andrew Reath. "Best textbook about ethics I've ever read."

3. Taking Laughter Seriously by John Morreall. "Best book I've ever read/used for class."

4. Mr. Blue by Myles Connollh. "I love Mr. Blue. It tells me how to stay happy in life, how an older person can help a younger person stay happy, how to spend one's life making other people, especially younger people, happy."

5. Tuesdays With Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson by Mitch Albom. "One of my all-time favorite novels."

6. The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff. "Another one of my all-time favorite novels."

7. The Nature of the Practical Intellect According to St. Thomas Aquinas by John E. Naus, S.J. "Obvious why!"

I met Fr. Naus my freshman year at Schroeder Hall in 1964. From that time on what he taught me has been a positive influence in my life. His influence extends to my daughters, Laura Class of 1998 and Michelle Class of 2002. Thank God for Fr. Naus
