gHosts in the halls

gHosts were spotted on campus helping vampires, witches, monkeys and ladybugs search for sugary sweets.

More than 350 student volunteers, including the gHosts (or trick-or-treating tour guides), handed out candy and ran carnival-like games for kids from the Milwaukee community as part of the annual HALLoween event.

Among the more than 300 children who participated were the 14 cousins of Shamika Johnson, Ed '08.

“They’ve been coming here since my freshman year," she says "They feel like it’s a safe way to go trick or treating."

Official candy hander-outers were stationed throughout campus at all nine residence halls and the Evans Scholars house.

According to Christy Bergen, assistant dean for residence life programs, students participate because of the service aspect of the program, which is sponsored by the Residence Hall Association.

“Most of them get excited about welcoming Milwaukee-area children to our community,” Bergen says. “And they love the holiday. They decorate their residence halls and dorm rooms.”

For sophomore Marcia Kreifels, this was a first.

“I am from a small town (Marseilles, Ill.), and we never went trick or treating or handed out candy,” she says. “It's fun.”
