ALUMNI PROFILE

Digital journalist

Lindsay Morris, Comm ’00, is used to pioneering new journalism technology.

By Nicole Sweeney Etter

Douglas KelleyShe edited the CD-ROM version of Marquette’s Hilltop, the first all-digital yearbook in the nation. Now she maintains a virtual office as senior editor/Web for VIVmag.com, which bills itself as the first “exclusively digital, interactive women’s lifestyle magazine.”

Morris credits Marquette for helping her land her spot at the downloadable, paperless publication. “We learned so much about packaging journalism in a way that is now very much in demand,” she says.

In 1996, Hilltop’s digital makeover won the notice of CNN and The Chronicle of Higher Education. But sales were disappointing, and the final issue was published in 1998.

“The technologies and concept were still so new back then,” she says. “We really were ahead of our time.”

After working for print magazines such as Folio and Shape, Morris is glad to be back in the digital world. “I’m touching upon a lot of what I learned at the Hilltop, trying to make sure we’re incorporating every angle of a story, offering the sounds, video and words as a whole package,” she says. “Working with VIV Publishing is bringing me back to what I envisioned for myself at Marquette. And it just took 10 years for the magazine industry to catch up.”
