Words can’t do justice to the joy Father Wild’s article (and column) in the spring issue gave me. In a way, he was only expressing attitudes and approaches inculcated in me 50 years ago by a Marquette education, but he did it so well! On one point I would take small issue with him. It wasn’t “left to the Jesuits to take care of the religious and faith dimensions” even when I was there. Teachers like Bob Kidera, Dave Host and Bob Dufour taught me as much as the Jesuits about being Catholic and — yes — Jesuit. Every day I thank God for my Marquette years and for keeping the place in such capable, intelligent and loving hands.

I write first to thank you for your fine work as editor of the Marquette alum magazine, and second to say that I very much hope the magazine will feature a piece in a later issue that gives voice to Christian pacifists who do not believe that military service and Christian discipleship are compatible. I suspect there are many alumni besides myself who in response to the question “What place has faith in war?” would unequivocally respond: “None.”

In your spring issue, there was an article about the Ambassador Hotel. I found this article especially interesting because my wife Nancy and I were married there in 1953 after I graduated from Marquette. Having been an NROTC student, we left Milwaukee shortly thereafter and traveled to San Diego for my first duty in the U.S. Navy. We now spend our retirement in Big Bear and Desert Hot Springs, Calif. We have been married 52 years and have two daughters and four grandchildren.
