Scientists Join Efforts

Alliance will boost research in southeastern Wisconsin.

Marquette faculty along with faculty from partner institutions will participate in research funded by the Biomedical Technology Alliance totaling $650,000 in grants. The BTA is committed to creating collaborations among member institutions and increasing academic research capacity in southeastern Wisconsin. Alliance members are Marquette, the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee School of Engineering, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, UW–Parkside and TechStar Foundation.

Dr. David Baker, assistant professor of biomedical sciences, will lead a study of cysteine prodrugs to determine if they may result in the treatment of schizophrenia and Dr. Daniel Sem, assistant professor of chemistry, will lead a study of dithio probes for imaging oxidative stress and screening drug tests. Both projects were chosen by the alliance’s Collaborative Grant Program, which provides research teams with funding to launch their efforts.

Faculty from the departments of Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Sciences, and the School of Dentistry will collaborate on five projects led by other institutions.
