Proud of Marquette

I just received the Fall 2006 issue of Marquette Magazine, and it made me so proud of Marquette. The university’s commitment to Milwaukee and the world is fantastic, and I feel honored to have two MU degrees.

Also, as a doctoral candidate and history professor in training, I loved the “Totally Dig Teaching” profiles. Reading about enthusiastic and innovative professors inspired me to think of creative ways to improve my own teaching.

My compliments and gratitude go out to Marquette’s faculty, staff and students who care about the world, and in their daily lives work to spread Marquette’s values and mission.

We've come a long way

A note to compliment you on the Fall 2006 issue of Marquette Magazine and especially on the story “The Beginnings.” The photographs are classics. I look forward to the next two stories in the series. I suspect a lot of labor went into this article, and it is appreciated by us “old grads.” Archbishop Henni had an extraordinary sense of foresight and persistence — what a prophet!

Marquette University has come a long way in these 125 years — what leadership has been exhibited by its presidents and faculty. We all have been blessed by this university, and we look forward to the future. Do keep up your efforts. The magazine is excellent.

Favorite teacher

Without a doubt, the best teacher I had or ever heard about was Father Haider, S.J., at Marquette in the 1950s. He was head of the math department.

In two 10-minute sessions, Father Haider taught me more mathematics than I learned in the previous 25 years. Although my grades were good enough because of brute memory, he knew my ignorance and invited me to the remedial sessions. That’s all it took. With his divine kindness he wiped away ignorance and confusion. I wish I had had him when I was age six.

Nostalgia from India

Greetings from Mysore, India. Thank you for sending Marquette Magazine regularly. Each time I go through those beautiful pages, it fills me with nostalgia of being at Marquette in the early 1980s.

Editor’s note

The Mandolin Club photo that appeared on the cover of the Winter 2006 issue of Marquette Magazine struck a note with readers. Several people called to let us know their grandfather or father or uncle posed for the photo. Their calls helped Special Collections and University Archives date the photo and identify the entire club. Take a look at the full picture of the Mandolin Club and list of club members.

(On some browsers the list of Mandolin Club members may appear in the text too small to read. For a larger version, click here to view larger text)
