The finer PoinTs of law
Every job has its perks. For Barbara Anderson-Brown, Arts ’91, it’s the chance to discover an excellent Bordeaux.

 Anderson-Brown is director and senior counsel for Diageo North America Inc. and primary counsel to Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, a job that blends her legal savvy with her passion for food and wine.
Her degree from Marquette prepared her well for John Marshall Law School. But she felt unfulfilled by ordinary lawyering. She started dabbling in culinary classes.
“At that time,” she says, “I was debating if it was law that I really wanted to stay in.”
Then she found her niche. “I didn’t realize there was so much opportunity for lawyers to get involved in the alcohol beverage industry,” she says. “This industry is highly regulated in terms of licensing, advertising and trade practices. My primary function as regulatory lawyer is to ensure the company’s operations are properly licensed as well as ensure the advertising and sales activities are compliant with federal and state regulations.”
And she has taken advantage of the opportunity to sample new wines. “I’m still learning as I go,” she says, “but I’ve definitely been spoiled.” Two recent favorites are the 2003 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges De Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District.
