St. Ignatius Loyola believed that regular opportunities for prayer and reflection enriched his life and those of his companions. For this reason, the Manresa Project includes funding for Marquette University employees to attend a weekend retreat.
The Manresa Project funds up to 20 university faculty, administrators and staff to attend a three-day weekend retreat. Reflection and prayer about your own life experiences are key components of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. This greater appreciation of how God works in one's life improves the ability to guide others in the process of listening to God's call.
This retreat experience, a one-time benefit, helps to establish values of reflection and prayer as crucial aspects in the discernment of life choices.
The Manresa Retreat Fund covers up to $240 of the cost of the retreat, paid directly to the retreat center. If a retreatant chooses, the $240 can be applied to the cost of a longer directed retreat (five- or eight-day) during the summer.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to take their retreat at the Jesuit Retreat House in Oshkosh, Wis. The weekend retreat consists of three-and-a-half days devoted to contemplation and reflection regarding one's own gifts, talents and life experiences. The Oshkosh weekend retreats begin Thursday evenings and end after lunch on Sundays.
A typical weekend "preached retreat" is a silent retreat that consists of "conferences," or public presentations, given by the retreat director, along with long periods of silence, opportunities for public prayer services, daily Mass, and the sacraments of reconciliation and healing. Retreatants stay in private rooms in the Retreat Center, located in a wooded setting on Lake Winnebago. Ample space exists for walking outdoors. Retreats are open to people of all denominations, although they are Christian in focus.
Marquette employees have a retreat benefit in their benefits package. For more information, contact Father Ed Mathie, S.J., director of University Ministry, at (414) 288-6873.
