Al McGuire, Marquette's
NCAA Championship coach renowned for his winning teams and his
winning wit, died Jan. 26. He was 72. McGuire coached basketball
at Marquette for 13 years, from 1964 to 1977, leading the teams
to 11 consecutive post-season bids and amassing a 295-80 win-loss
tally. He had the best coaching record of any Marquette coach.
With a career winning percentage of 0.739, he ranks 17th in all-time
Division I coaching success. He was elected to the Basketball
Hall of Fame
in 1992.
