I was deeply saddened to hear that Mr. McGuire passed away. Al MGuire was first class! He was a model that we all can use for living life to its fullest. Al McGuire will always be associated with Marquette University. This relationship is one that all of us in the MU family can be very proud of. Mike McClelland, Arts & Sciences, 1973

Al, Forty five years ago as 5 year old in your Rockaway bar, while the Irish men were drinking and talking with their cronies, you entertained me and all the other kids with your basketball dribbling skills behind the bar. Since that time, you have continued to entertain countless millions with your coaching, broadcasting and wonderfully unique personality. You were one of a kind and we will miss you and never forget you. Seashells & balloons.

Whenever Al was somewhere on campus, I dropped everything and ran to see him. I did this in 1975, 1976 and 1977. I idolized him. My roomates soon began referring to me as "little Al". I loved it. Everything about him appealed to me. I wanted to be a coach because of him. His players(several of whom Iwas friends with) had great character. He and Lloyd Walton, or Bo Ellis would put on a show at the bench. I was devastated when he left. It was the end of the glory days. Now, I am even more devastated. I was glad to hear of the story of Coach Majerus spending some time with him. He was an invaluable asset to Marquette and someone I have looked up to my entire life.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him. I was only 8 when Marquette won it all. After high school, I applied to about 5 universities, and when I got my acceptance letter from Marquette, my dad (huge sports fan) jumped up in the air and instead of congratulating me or patting me on the back, he just said, "HEY!! THAT'S WHERE AL MCGUIRE COACHED!" 4 years at Marquette and watching reruns with my dad have endeared him to me. Thanks, Al. As my dad sums it up, "You're a class act!"

We were able to make it up for the last game against Louisville, so that we could see the new Al McGuire floor. I was fortunate to have been at MU in '77 and I was one of those folks who got a seat way up in the rafters. We would wear bright colors so that Al could see that the seats were filled. I also remember him wearing a very loud, but fashionable for the times, sportcoat....to indicate that we had received a bid or gotten into a tourney. Very dapper classy man. Here's an idea....you should solicit every alum who was at MU in 1977 for a donation to Al's fund. I know you would get quite an outpouring. Try it.

when i was young (very young, in the seventies I was an enfant-terrible-guard in Italy's 2nd division), the basket fanzines talk about your Al and his boys of the Marquette's team. they spoke in these terms: "a group of dirty and little boys very motivated led by a inspired mytical coach"

I just remember Al's final season, my sophmore year in high school. It was unbelievable for them to win the NCAA Title in his final game as coach. What a way to finish a career and start a new carrer as a broadcaster.
