AT THE HAGGERTY

The Savior, His Saints and Martyrs
August 31 – December 31, 2011

This exhibition of small-scale portraits of Christ, saints and martyrs by artists from the sixteenth through the eighteenth century celebrates the lives of those identified by the Roman Catholic Church as saintly. By the fourth century, specific individuals, like Jerome, who translated the Old Testament from Hebrew into Latin, were recognized for their extraordinary contributions to the Church. They continue to be known for holiness, great deeds, or commendable behavior as teachers, intercessors, or ascetics. Two such included in the exhibition are Mary Magdalene and the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows. Also represented are select religious figures from Saint John of Patmos to Saint Bruno, who refused to become the archbishop of Calabria in southern Italy in order to live a life of quiet contemplation. Many Catholic saints, but not all, were also martyrs. Persecuted and then put to death for their beliefs, the martyrs depicted here include Saint Peter and Saint Stephen, who was stoned to death for blasphemy.
