Mission Week 2008

Faith Doing Justice
February 3 - 9

2008 marked the 100th birthday of the late Rev. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., Superior General of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) from 1965 to 1983. Father Arrupe, like his long-ago predecessor, Ignatius of Loyola, was a man of vision and conviction. His intellect, compassion and leadership combined in both obvious and subtle ways to create a powerful example of placing the poor and marginalized at the center of our concern. Father Arrupe's famous speech asserting the absolute priority of Jesuit education to be the formation of "[women and] men for others" is now the standard to which we hold ourselves accountable.

In the spirit of Father Arrupe, the theme, Faith Doing Justice, relected our commitment to a Marquette education that integrates intellectual rigor, spiritual depth and concrete action for a more just and peaceful world. A wide selection of events has been designed to explore each of these important dimensions of Marquette.

The success of Mission Week ultimately can be judged by the way God's spirit of Faith Doing Justice becomes evident in our own lives and work.

Marquette's Mission

Dedicated to serving God by serving our students, faculty, and staff, Marquette University contributes to the advancement of knowledge by searching for truth, discovering and sharing knowledge, fostering personal and professional excellence, promoting a life of faith, and developing service leadership in others.

At Marquette, we believe the pursuit of excellence is a lifelong endeavor and education needs to encompass the whole person, through formation of the mind and heart. We are committed to the unfettered pursuit of truth under the mutually illuminating powers of human intelligence and Christian faith. All members of the Marquette community, from every faith tradition, give concrete expression to these beliefs by giving of themselves in service to those in need.
