Tuesday, Feb. 5: Faith and Service

8 a.m. to 10 a.m., Service Recognition
Look for surprise visits from the Mission Week Committee, honoring service in offices across campus.

8 a.m. and throughout the week, Snow Sculpting
AMU, Westowne Square
Watch Team USA, the international snow sculpting team of Captain Tom Queoff, Michael Martino and Michael Sponholtz, as they create a sculpture celebrating Mission Week. The group has created more than 80 sculptures and has won 21 competitions across Alaska, Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The three have also created works in Finland, Italy, Russia, Sweden and at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

11:30 a.m. to noon, Ignatian Reflection
The Chapel of The Holy Family
St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits, referred to himself and his companions as "contemplatives in action." One of the ways Marquette remains in tune with its mission is by taking time for reflection on what we do and how we do it in the light of God. Join Sister Carol Ann Smith, S.H.C.J., and the Rev. Gene Merz, S.J., from the Center for Ignatian Spirituality, for a guided reflection that will help you to reconnect with the deeper meaning of your life and work.

Noon to 3 p.m., Mission Celebration Kick-off
AMU, Second Floor, Ballroom and Westowne Square
In Our Own Voice: Stories of Faith and Commitment
Mission Week officially starts with great food and stories of service and faith from members of the Marquette community. A wide variety of students, faculty, staff and administrators will share their thoughts on the themes of "What Matters to Me and Why" and "My Life of Faith."

Some other terrific reasons to attend the Mission Week Kick-off:

  • Free coffee, cider, hot chocolate, and soup (with fish crackers) will be available in the ballroom.
  • Live music on the second floor.
  • Donations of books or money for the purchase of books can be made to the Children's Book Fund.
  • A Winterfeast luncheon of loaves and fishes will be served in the AMU, Marquette Place, located on the second floor. Students are welcome to use their meal card and faculty and staff can purchase a great meal.

Something Is Fishy in the AMU!
The 75 Mission Week Fish, decorated by university offices and organizations to reflect the university's four key values, will debut in the AMU. Stroll the halls to view these amazing creations and try to out-guess our alumni judges in selecting the three winners.

7 p.m., Black Women's Professional Panel
AMU, 227
Celebrate Excellence by attending this panel of outstanding African American women, including Delores Sims, co-founder of Legacy Bank; Dr. Michelle A. Robinson, director of informatics and assistant professor of public health in the School of Dentistry; and, Cherryl Thomas, chair of the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board. Presented as part of Black History Month and the Multicultural Center's "Leadership Connections" Series.
