About the MPN

The MPN for the Federal Direct Loan is a promissory note that is signed online. One MPN is valid for up to 10 years. Before filling out the MPN at the Direct Loan Promissory Note Web site, you will need to collect some basic information in advance. The MPN must be completed in one sitting. An MPN cannot be saved and completed at a later time.

Steps for receiving and completing the Federal Direct Loan MPN:

  1. Students must first accept the Federal Direct loan on CheckMarq.
  2. Students will be notified by e-mail that an MPN is available to sign online. Attempting to sign the MPN before receiving notification that an MPN is available will result in an error message.
  3. Before filling out the MPN, it is important to collect some basic information. Download and print the MPN worksheet to use as a guide. (Optional)
  4. After completing the worksheet, visit studentaid.gov to sign the MPN.
