Class Section Numbering

Section Numbering

Courses at Marquette are assigned a catalog number, and the number indicates the education level of the course as specified by the course numbering policy.

In addition, regular daytime classes (those beginning before 4 p.m. and are not Professional Studies Program or Honors), have section numbers assigned between 101 and 679.

  1. All graded sections are numbered between 101 and 399.
  2. Lab sections that meet before 4 p.m. and are associated with daytime courses are numbered between 401 and 469.
  3. Quiz sections that meet before 4 p.m. and are associated with daytime courses are numbered between 501 and 569.
  4. Discussion sections that meet before 4 p.m. and are associated with daytime courses are numbered between 601 and 669.

Evening classes (those beginning at 4 p.m. or later and are not Professional Studies Program or Honors), have section numbers between 701 and 769.

  1. All graded sections are numbered between 701 to 739.
  2. Lab sections that are associated with evening courses (no matter when they meet), are numbered between 741 and 749.
  3. Quiz sections that are associated with evening courses (no matter when they meet), are numbered between 751 and 759.
  4. Discussion sections that are associated with evening courses (no matter when they meet), are numbered between 761 and 769.

Honors classes have section numbers between 901 and 999.

  1. All graded honors sections are numbered between 901 to 939.
  2. Lab sections for honors courses are numbered between 941 and 949.
  3. Quiz sections for honors courses are numbered between 951 and 959.
  4. Discussion sections for honors courses are numbered between 961 and 969.
  5. Note: There will be no separate evening section distinction.

Sections for components that are no longer valid must e changed to the new component for the class (e.g., if the catalog formerly defined a course's component as lecture but now defines it as seminar, the lecture component class sections will need to be changed to the SEM component in the Schedule of Classes.)

Changing section numbers after SOC building has ended and students are registered.

College
make a copy of each class roster that is to be changed.
drop all of the students from each affected section.
when the students are dropped submit a CLSS workflow changing the section number.

Office of the Registrar
notify the college when the section numbers are changed.

College
re-register each student in the appropriate section.

Note

Because this is an optional change and is the choice of the college to change section numbers after students are registered, do not disadvantage students who have already registered and ask them to re-enroll for a new section.  It is now the responsibility of the college to manually re-register students into these changed sections and notify the students of the change.
