Gender Issues

The university demonstrates its commitment to fair and equitable treatment of both male and female student-athletes and athletics department personnel. As part of the 1997 certification review, the department developed a gender equity plan that includes goals for proportionate participation opportunities across sports; equitable benefits to coaches, particularly men’s and women’s basketball coaches; equitable access to practice facilities; equitable marketing, promotion and sports information practices; and increased numbers of qualified female candidates for coaching and administrative openings. The department has taken steps to achieve these goals and remains in substantial conformity with the NCAA expectations for gender equity, as well as with its own goals. The Equity Committee has been reconstituted and has a regular meeting schedule, although it had not regularly convened recently. A five-year gender-equity plan has been included in the self-study to ensure continued monitoring and improvement of gender equity. The Equity Committee has reviewed and endorsed the plan and will monitor its implementation.

Student-Athlete Welfare

The university is committed to the fair treat of student-athletes and provides evidence that the welfare of student-athletes and their fair treatment is monitored, evaluated and addressed on a continuing basis. The student-athletes themselves, through their representatives elected to the Student Athlete Advisory Council, have access to athletics administration in order to raise any concerns or offer input. All student-athletes who are graduating or concluding their eligibility are invited to participate in written and oral exit interviews. The results of these interviews are reviewed and any issues related to gender, diversity and/or welfare are addressed. Academic and career issues are addressed through orientation, study skills and life skills programming. Overall, student-athletes report satisfaction with their full experience at Marquette. Other matters pertaining to relevant welfare policies and procedures are also described in this section.
