1. Miracle on Central Mall celebration is tomorrrow

The 20th Annual Miracle on Central Mall, “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”, will be held on Friday, Dec. 8, at 5 p.m. in front of the St. Joan of Arc Chapel. Celebrate the holiday season with Rev. Robert Wild, S.J., Marquette University President, as he lights and blesses the Marquette Christmas tree. Then enjoy renditions of your favorite Christmas carols and a festive reception.

In order to make this event a success, the Residence Hall Association is asking each university department to make an ornament to place on the Marquette Christmas tree. All ornaments will be donated to local charities. Materials are available in the LEAD center, located on the first floor of the Alumni Memorial Union. RHA is also asking each department to donate gloves and socks to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. Please bring your donations to the tree lighting ceremony.

Interested departments please RSVP to RHA at 8-5821 or at e-mail by Wednesday, Dec. 6.

5. Cords to be honored, books collected at Saturday's basketball game

Saturday's men's basketball game will feature more than the 113th meeting between Marquette and the University of Wisconsin.

Athletic Director Bill Cords will be honored at halftime for his 20 years of service to Marquette's athletic program. Cords, whom Marquette President Robert A. Wild, S.J., described in an October retirement announcement as a "man of class and integrity," is retiring at the end of the month.

In addition, fans can bring new or “gently used” children’s books to the Bradley Center as part of the sixth annual School Children’s Book Drive sponsored by Women in Support of Marquette Athletics (WISMA).

Spearheaded by Joani Crean, wife of Marquette Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Crean, and Gwen Cords, wife of Marquette Athletics Director Bill Cords, the book drive collects donations for schools and organizations serving children near the Marquette community.  There will also be canisters to accept monetary donations.

“These events are very important to us because there is no greater gift a child can receive than to learn the love of reading,” said Mrs. Crean.  “We know that we have wonderful and generous fans, and we are thankful to have the opportunity through Marquette Athletics to help bring books to Milwaukee children.”

This Saturday’s game will be the 113th meeting between Marquette and University of Wisconsin.

6. Support Midnight Run with a holiday donation

Midnight Run is offering a philanthropic alternative to holiday gift giving.  Consider a donation to Midnight Run (you choose the amount) on behalf of a friend or family member and you will receive a gift card recognizing your contribution to our mission.   Midnight Run Holiday Cards are available in the University Ministry office, located in room 236 of the Alumni Memorial Union.

The images on these holiday cards are offered courtesy of Leroy Skalstadt, a local photographer.  Leroy is a formerly homeless disabled Vietnam veteran.  Click here to see images of the Midnight Run Holiday Cards.

Midnight Run is a student-led service organization of University Ministry that serves the needs of hungry and homeless people in the neighborhood around Marquette University. All funds to support this program come from donations and student fundraising.

7. New SPAM filters in place

Have you noticed less SPAM in your Inbox lately?  IT Services installed new SPAM filters which are now deleting many of the annoying SPAM messages immediately.  Each message is assigned a SCL (SPAM Confidence Level) 0-9 when it comes into the campus system.  Any message rated 7 and above is automatically deleted, and all others are sent to your Inbox.

See this link to configure Outlook to send additional SPAM messages to your Junk Mail folder. Approximately 80 percent of the e-mail messages that come into the campus are classified as SPAM and are being deleted.

The SPAM filtering software is part of the upgrade to Exchange 2007.  It has been improved so that IT Services receives automatic updates much like virus definitions.  IT Services also has the ability to automatically block specific Internet addresses if they are determined to be sending SPAM to the campus.  Currently there are more than 1,000 addresses being blocked.

8. Basketball fans can order DVDs of games from 1935 to 1990

More than 200 men’s basketball games, spanning 1935 to1990, are now available on DVD.

Raynor Memorial Libraries' Department of Special Collections converted the game footage from 16 millimeter film to DVD. Archivists used a variety of sources to enhance the description for each game.

A complete inventory/index is online and DVD copies may be ordered, at $10 per DVD. The announcement page includes a 44-second sample clip of the 1981 home game against Notre Dame, won with Doc River's last-second shot.

The men’s basketball project is one of three 125th anniversary projects funded by the M Club, The club also funded the recently announced photo digitization project covering women's varsity sports, "Women in Blue and Gold," and is providing the funding for a new undertaking which will debut in mid-2007, digitizing 1925 to 1960 MU football games.

10. Habitat for Humanity plans summer service trip to Chile

Do you want participate in a service opportunity that is unlike any trip?

Habitat for Humanity is sponsoring a service trip to Chile next summer from May 21, 2007 to June 4, 2007.  An informational meeting will be held tonight, Thursday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m. outside the Office of Student Development, next to the MUSG office near the Brew on the first floor of the AMU.

If you are interested and can’t make it, let us know by e-mail.

11. SSP offers end-of-semester reminders

As the fall semester draws to a close, the Student Safety Program (SSP) offers the following reminders.

With the opening of the Wisconsin Avenue bridge, the LIMO stop route again includes the front door of Straz Tower.  LIMO vans will no longer provide service to parking lots R/RR, but will reroute instead to the front doors of the residence hall on Wisconsin Ave.

SSP will be operating as normal during finals week.  Please be patient as we try to accommodate all students’ transportation requests during this busy study time.  Please be ready and waiting with a Marquette ID ready to show your driver upon their arrival.

The great blizzard of Dec. 1 has left the city streets with a lot of leftover snow and slush.  Please be patient as we work around the winter weather.  SSP will continue to adjust our operations in response to inclement weather to facilitate safer escorts and transports for Marquette students and staff.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to e-mail SSP. SSP services are available from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. daily and may be requested by phone at 8-6363.

12. Internet bandwidth increased

IT Services has upgraded the university’s Internet bandwidth.

In an effort to meet the needs of our students, faculty and staff for quick Internet access, bandwidth was increased by 20 percent.  With the rollout of wireless access to all Residence Halls over the past six months, it is much easier for Marquette’s students to access the Internet and therefore the demand to do so has increased.
