1. Outstanding speakers announced for Mission Week 2007

Three speakers who exposed or reported on the Enron scandal will participate in Marquette's 2007 Mission Week. The theme for the week is "Challenged to Choose, the Courage to Act."

Lynn Brewer, former executive of Enron Inc. and author of a book detailing her experience as a whistleblower at the company, will be the featured keynote speaker on Thursday, Feb. 8. She will speak at 4 p.m. in the Varsity Theatre. Ticket information will be available early in the spring semester.

At Enron, Brewer was responsible for risk management in energy operations, e-commerce initiatives for Enron's water subsidiary, and competitive intelligence for Enron Broadband Services. Witness to many instances of illegal and corrupt dealings, she wrote House of Cards: Confessions of an Enron Executive, a brutal account of her career at the company. Since leaving Enron, Brewer has become an outspoken advocate of cultural integrity, providing compelling details into Enron's rise and fall.

To complement Lynn Brewer’s appearance, Marquette will also host Bethany McLean, the Fortune magazine reporter who first broke the Enron story and subsequently co-authored the book, The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron. McLean will give the Diederich College of Communication Burleigh Media Ethics Lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007, at 7 p.m. in AMU Ballroom E.

In addition to these two notable speakers, Alex Gibney, the Academy Award-nominated director of the documentary film based on McLean’s book, will visit Marquette to speak and engage in a talkback following a viewing of his acclaimed film, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room. The movie will be shown as part of the MUSG Varsity Movie Series during the weekend of Feb. 2-3, 2007. Gibney will be on campus Friday, Feb. 2, and will speak following the 9 p.m. showing of his film in the Varsity Theatre. Dean John Pauly of the Diederich College of Communication will host the talkback.

Finally, the School of Education will host Dr. Karen Ristau, president of the National Catholic Education Association, who will speak on “The Grace of Great Things: The Case for Catholic Education, K-16.” Dr. Ristau will speak on Wednesday, Feb. 7; the exact time and venue will be announced at a later date.

3. D2L will be upgraded later this month

Marquette’s online course management system, Desire2Learn, will be upgraded to a new version on Dec. 20. Although this upgrade will bring some new functionality, the basic operation of D2L will remain familiar to current users.

The most noticeable change may be the D2L login page, which will have a new look and contain links to D2L resources, documentation, training and more. There will also be improvements to many other familiar functions including News, Quizzes, the HTML editor, and the ability to more easily copy components from a previous site into a new one.

The D2L upgrade will run from midnight on Wednesday, Dec. 20, through 7 a.m. the following day.  During this time students and faculty will not have access to D2L.

If you are interested in faculty training, it is offered at a variety of days and times. Click here for dates and to register. For more information about the upgrade, please contact the IT Services Help Desk at 288-7799

4. Have your vacant house checked over break

Students and staff who live in the near off-campus area and are out of town for the winter break (as well as any break or weekend) can have their residences periodically monitored by Public Safety officers. Fill out a Vacant House Watch Form, which is available online and at the Department of Public Safety’s office, Parking Structure 1, 749 N. 16th St., and submit it to Public Safety by Monday, Dec. 19.

The department of Public Safety encourages students and staff to also make their residences look lived in while they are away by using timers on lamps, stopping mail deliveries, etc.

For more information, contact Public Safety at 8-6800.

15. Marquette password requirements changing

Starting Dec. 31, all centrally managed Marquette passwords (D2L, CheckMarq, eMarq, MyJob, etc.) will need to meet complexity requirements, meaning that when you want to reset your password or are prompted to change it, your password:

  • must contain characters from three of four categories:
    • Uppercase characters (A through Z)
    • Lowercase characters (a through z)
    • Digits 0 through 9
    • Non-alphabet characters (for example, !, $, #, %)
  • cannot contain all or part of your username
  • must be different from your previous two. The system will track former passwords.
  • must be at least eight characters long and will be changed every 180 days, as before.

In addition, to further enhance security for financial data, MyJob will have an automatic logout after a predetermined period of inactivity.

IT recognizes the inconvenience of these requirements; however, the need to provide increased security to the critical information contained in these accounts is paramount. Please see online for more information.
