A Message from Father Wild

As we finish the first week of classes, I welcome each of you to our 125th Anniversary Year which we celebrate under the theme of 125 Years of Faith and Learning in Action.

We find ourselves with much to applaud: record applications in dentistry and law, and for this fall’s freshman class, an advance of four places in the U.S. News & World Report rankings to No. 81 among national universities, along with a special commendation for our programs in service-learning, a top 50 ranking from the Washington Monthly, inclusion among the Princeton Review’s 361 best colleges in the country, and a great sense of excitement as we begin our second year in the Big East Conference.

We received another distinction that makes me especially thankful for the opportunity to be a member of the Marquette community. The Business Journal of Greater Milwaukee named Marquette University a “Great Place to Work.” In making the award, the Business Journal wrote “Excellence. Faith. Leadership. Service. To most, those are a collection of seemingly random words. But to the employees and students of Marquette University, those words are the mission of the Marquette family.”

The staff at the Business Journal recognized something that I’ve known for quite some time. What truly sets Marquette apart is not the accolades of others — as pleased as we are to receive them. What makes Marquette University special is the dedication that our faculty and staff demonstrate each and every day to our mission of educating students as leaders in service to others and to the advancement of knowledge in a serious and sustained way.

As the campus begins to resonate with the energy and excitement that only a new school year can bring, I thank you for sharing your talent and your time with this special place. I hope you’ll be able to join the official celebration of our 125th Anniversary next Friday at 12:30 p.m. on Central Mall.

May our good and gracious God bless you abundantly.

President Robert A. Wild, S.J.
