1. Don't miss the university’s 125th anniversary celebration

Mark your calendar! Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a celebration of the university’s 125th anniversary on Friday, Sept. 8, at 12:30 p.m. on Central Mall. The program will be led by Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Marquette President Robert A. Wild, S.J. A dessert reception will follow.

2. Registration deadline for Briggs and Al’s Run and Walk tomorrow

Join hundreds of Marquette students, faculty, staff and alumni for the 29th annual Briggs and Al’s Run and Walk for Children’s Hospital on Saturday, Sept. 16.  The registration deadline is noon on Wednesday, Sept. 6.  Click here for registration forms or pick up a form in the Alumni Memorial Union at the University Information Desk.

Fees are $16 for Marquette students, $18 for non-students (adults) and $8 for children age 12 and younger.  Check, cash or MarquetteCASH will be accepted for Marquette participants who register by September 6. MarquetteCASH will not be accepted as a form of payment after September 6, or on the day of the event.  All checks should be made payable to: Briggs and Al’s Run & Walk.

Tom Crean, Marquette men’s basketball coach, and his wife Joni will again serve as grand marshals for the event that has raised more than $7 million for medical care, education, advocacy and research efforts at Children’s Hospital. The event includes an 8K run and 3- and 5-mile walks.

Volunteer Opportunities
As in years past, more than 150 Marquette University students, faculty, staff and friends are needed to make this year’s event a huge success.  Opportunities include: Set-Up Crew, Children’s Champion Breakfast, Registration, Volunteer Check-In, Information/Traffic Movers, Warm-Up Drop Off, Warm-Up Pick Up, and route Sentries.

3. AMU and Spirit Shop offers 125th Anniversary specials

In honor of the kick-off of Marquette’s 125th anniversary this week, the Alumni Memorial Union and the Marquette Spirit Shop will offer the following special discounts and promotions throughout the day Friday, Sept. 8:

In the Annex: French fry basket for $1.25

In the Brew Bayou: Any size coffee for $1.25

In the Lunda Room: A special dessert for $1.25

At Marquette Place: An old-fashioned hot fudge sundae available during the lunch period for $1.25

4. Career Services Center plans open house

The Career Services Center will hold an open house on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from noon to 3 p.m.  The event will include tours of the office and an introduction to the range of services that the Career Services Center offers to students (undergraduate and graduate) as well as free food and numerous giveaways and prizes.  It is a great opportunity for students to learn how the Career Services Center can help them achieve their career goals. 

Please encourage your students to attend this event.  Faculty and staff are also invited to attend. 

The Career Services Center is located on the first floor of in Holthusen Hall (next to Varsity Theater).

5. Milwaukee pastor to speak at Peter Favre Forum

The Peter Favre Forum will hold its first meeting of the 2006-07 year on Wednesday, Sept. 20. Co-sponsored by the College of Business Administration and St. Francis Seminary, the forum invites business leaders and others to presentations by well-known catechists, authors and speakers.

This month’s meeting will feature the Very Rev. Tim Kitzke, pastor of Three Holy Women Parish and Old St. Mary’s in Milwaukee, speaking on “Holiness and Wholeness in the Everyday.”  The meeting begins at 7:30 a.m. at  The University Club, 924 E. 6. Law School holds information sessions

The Law School Office of Admissions will host regular information sessions for prospective applicants beginning Friday, Sept. 15, at 12:30 p.m. in Sensenbrenner Hall, Room 245. The sessions are conducted in a question and answer format in which prospective students may inquire about the Law School, admissions policies and procedures, curriculum, intellectual and student life, financial aid and more. A tour of the Law School conducted by a current law student is scheduled to follow each information session.

To ensure productive sessions, prospective applicants should arrive prepared to ask questions. It is not necessary to schedule your attendance at an information session in advance, nor is attendance at an information session mandatory of applicants.

7. Women's soccer match on Wednesday to be nationally televised

Tomorrow’s women's soccer matchup between No. 11-ranked Marquette and No. 27-ranked Saint Louis will be aired live on the Fox Soccer Channel, beginning at 7 p.m.
 
The match, played at Saint Louis, kicks off the 20-game telecast schedule of collegiate soccer - the NSCAA Game of the Week - on the nation's preeminent soccer network. In all, 10 women's and 16 men's teams ranked in the NSCAA/Adidas® pre-season Top 25 will be a part of the 2006 broadcast schedule.
 
"Our team is thrilled to take part in the inaugural televised women's collegiate match on Fox Soccer Channel, sponsored by the NSCAA." said head coach Markus Roeders. "The opportunity to play a live match that will be broadcast across the country is exciting for our players and the Marquette community. We expect a great game - both teams are nationally ranked - and all of the previous matchups over the years have been thrilling and hard fought. Fans of Marquette, and soccer in general, across the country should be treated to an entertaining game."

8. Rec Plex group exercise classes start soon

Signups for group exercise classes at the Rec Plex start on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7 a.m.  Classes include Total Body Conditioning, Lethal Legs, Kick 'n Sculpt, Yoga for Beginners and a lunch break class.  Email amy.bockman@mu.edu with questions or for a schedule.

10. Week of Sept. 4, 2006 Interchange Highlights

1. While this is not an Interchange project, the City of Milwaukee Wisconsin Avenue Streetscaping project will begin today, Sept. 5.  This is a pedestrian-oriented project that will take place between 8th and 10th Streets, and will involve the construction of new sidewalks, medians, planters, etc. There will be a designated pedestrian area across Wisconsin Avenue at all times somewhere between 9th and 10th Streets.  Work is anticipated to be suspended in mid-November with suitable sidewalks in place, and the remainder of the work will be finished next spring.

2.  Sign-up for the fourth quarter of Easy Pass (Marquette’s faculty and staff payroll deduction program for the Milwaukee County Transit System) is underway.  Sign up in Union Station in the AMU between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. before Friday, Sept. 15, to get a pass valid from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31.  The Easy Pass provides unlimited rides aboard Milwaukee County buses in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, including Freeway Flyers and special event shuttles.

3. Brief periods of sheeting removal will occur at various times during the next couple of weeks on the freeway, east of Carpenter Tower.
 
4. Carpentry work and steel reinforcing placement will take place most nights this week for the new Wisconsin Avenue Bridge deck.  This work is being coordinated with freeway closures since some of this work is being done over I-43. Noise levels should be minimal. 

5. The Walnut Bridge opened on Friday, Sept. 1.  A City of Milwaukee paving project will limit it to two westbound lanes and only one eastbound lane for several weeks.

6. The 25th Street Bridge also reopened Sept. 1.

7. There will again be numerous overnight lane restrictions on both eastbound and westbound I-94 between 16th and 26th Streets.
