1. Celebrate the start of the 2006-07 school year

Celebrate the beginning of the new academic year at the Mass of The Holy Spirit on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 4 p.m. at Gesu Church.

The Mass will be followed by the 16th Annual All-University Welcome Back Picnic from 5 to 7 p.m. in Westowne Square. Casual dress is appropriate. Parking will be available in all university lots.

2. Prayer service planned to commemorate the anniversary of Katrina

Students, faculty and staff are invited to a prayer service on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. outside of the St. Joan of Arc Chapel to commemorate the lives lost and those still struggling in the Gulf Coast region as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The prayer service is sponsored by University Ministry. Please join the Marquette community in hope and prayer for all those who have been touched by this tragedy.

The American Psychological Association has granted full accreditation to the School of Education’s doctoral program in Counseling Psychology for the maximum seven-year period.

Bill Henk, dean of the School of Education, cited the leadership of Associate Professors Tim Melchert and Todd Campbell, co-directors of training for the Counseling Psychology program, as well as the efforts and caliber of all the Counseling Psychology faculty and students. Melchert coordinated the re-accreditation process. Dr. Sarah Knox is the new director of training for the program.

“This decision speaks highly of the talents and efforts of the department faculty and students along with the various administrators who support our program,” Melchert says.

As part of an effort led by IT Services and the Instructional Media Center, specific PCs on campus will be managed via the network. This will allow for faster repair, more frequent updates and better security. Areas under central management can be found at online.

These computers are located in Smart Classrooms throughout campus, as well as in public spaces including: Brew Cudahy; Cudahy 108; the Brew Bayou; the Marquette Place in the AMU; and outside the Human Resources office in Straz Tower.

2. You should log off the PC when you have finished using it. (The computer will automatically log off after 30 minutes of inactivity in Smart Classrooms and 20 minutes of inactivity in public spaces.)

5. Sign up now for Briggs and Al’s Run and Walk

Join hundreds of Marquette students, faculty, staff and alumni for the 29th annual Briggs and Al’s Run and Walk for Children’s Hospital on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Tom Crean, Marquette men’s basketball coach, and his wife Joni will again serve as grand marshals for the event that has raised more than $7 million for medical care, education, advocacy and research efforts at Children’s Hospital. The event includes an 8K run and 3- and 5-mile walks.

For registration with Marquette, pick up and drop off team or individual packets in the Alumni Memorial Union at the University Information Desk on the second floor or in room 245. Registration is due by noon on Wednesday, September 6. Fees are $16 for Marquette students, $18 for non-students (adults) and $8 for children age 12 and younger. Check, cash or MarquetteCASH will be accepted for Marquette participants who register by September 6. MarquetteCASH will not be accepted as a form of payment after September 6, or on the day of the event. All checks should be made payable to: Briggs and Al’s Run & Walk.

Volunteer Opportunities
As in years past, more than 150 Marquette University students, faculty, staff and friends are needed to make this year’s event a huge success. Opportunities include: Set-Up Crew, Children’s Champion Breakfast, Registration, Volunteer Check-In, Information/Traffic Movers, Warm-Up Drop Off, Warm-Up Pick Up, and route Sentries.

Marquette’s chapter of Sigma Delta Pi is one of 16 honored by the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society for its 2005-06 activities.

The “honor chapter” designation is based on chapter projects that reflect excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding and upholding the goals of the organization. Sigma Delta Pi has 540 chapters nationwide.

Dr. German Carrillo is the Marquette chapter’s adviser and the national president of Sigma Delta Pi.

The opportunity to have payroll checks directly deposited into personal bank accounts is available to faculty, staff and student employees. Direct deposit means paychecks are automatically deposited into personal bank accounts on scheduled pay dates without having to first pick up checks and then make special trips to the bank or the Office of the Bursar.

Paychecks can be deposited into multiple accounts as well as out-of-state financial institutions. Those who do not have personal bank accounts, or prefer to establish a local banking relationship, may easily open an account at the U.S. Bank branch location in the Alumni Memorial Union.

To initiate the direct deposit process, log into Employee Self-service via MyJob. MyJob is an online application that gives you easy access to your employment and benefit information. Find out more about MyJob and how it’s used online.

Once you’ve logged into MyJob using your eMarq user name and password, choose “Personal Actions” from the menu, then “Manage Payroll Payments.” Follow the instructions on the screen, entering the appropriate routing and account numbers for each deposit amount. You will receive a message in "Notifications” on MyJob once Payroll accepts your direct deposit information.
