Mark your calendar! Students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in a celebration of the university’s 125th anniversary on Friday, Sept. 8, at 12:30 p.m. on Central Mall. The program will be led by Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Marquette President Robert A. Wild, S.J. A dessert reception will follow.

2. Prayer service planned to commemorate the anniversary of Katrina

Students, faculty and staff are invited to a prayer service on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. outside of the St. Joan of Arc Chapel to commemorate the lives lost and those still struggling in the Gulf Coast region as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The prayer service is sponsored by University Ministry. Please join the Marquette community in hope and prayer for all those who have been touched by this tragedy.

Celebrate the last days of summer and the beginning of the school year with a Marquette tradition. Mania Week 2006 is sponsored by the Marquette University Student Government (MUSG). All events are free unless otherwise noted.

Tickets for events can be purchased in the Brooks Lounge on the first floor of the AMU Monday through Friday from noon to 11:30 p.m. and on weekends from 2 p.m. to 11:30 pm.

All students have free membership at Marquette’s Helfaer Recreation Center and the Rec Plex. Due to the increasing usage of these facilities, it is necessary to limit the number of registered guests to two this year. An exception to this rule is that members playing doubles’ tennis will still be allowed to register three guests at the time they make a court reservation.

To better accommodate the growing student interest in fitness and exercise, the racquetball/handball courts at the Helfaer Rec Center are being converted into additional cardio workout space. Thus, racquetball/handball will only be available at the RecPlex.

The families of students are also eligible for recreational sports memberships. Pick up a rate sheet at either the Helfaer Rec Center or the RecPlex.

Marquette’s wireless network has been upgraded to improve security and provide Internet access for guests and alumni. In addition, all residence halls and Marquette apartments will have 100 percent wireless coverage by Christmas 2006.

Students will simply need to launch their Internet browser and log-in with their CheckMarq username and password. Guests without a CheckMarq username and password will need to contact the Help Desk to request temporary access.

Then join us for the "Finding God in All Things" Camping Retreat, Sept. 22 - 24, 2006. We will be traveling to the North Kettle Moraine Forest- Greenbush to retreat under the stars. Cost is $45 and registration is online.

The task of recording a church’s history can be difficult and even overwhelming, especially when documents are not kept current. Find out how to preserve your parish memories and traditions at the all-day congregational history workshop for church historians and archivists on Saturday, Sept. 16. Drs. John Krugler and Steve Avella, professors of history at Marquette, will discuss where archivists and historians should start, why it is important to write good histories and the possible challenges in collecting data and managing an archive.

The workshop will take place in the Alumni Memorial Union. Pre-registration is required by Friday, Sept. 1, along with a $25 admission fee. For additional information, contact the Marquette University History Department at 288-7217.

Sign up for group fitness classes at the Helfaer Recreation Center (16th & Clybourn) begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 5. Come early, because there are limited spots available.

Some of the classes offered are: Pilates, Cardio-Tone, Martial Arts, Beginning Kickboxing, Kickboxing, Spin & Tone, Spinning, Body Blast, Intense Body Conditioning and Circuit Exercise.

Auditions will be held Aug. 29 through Sept. 1 for the Marquette Liturgical Choir. The 60-member ensemble sings for the 4 p.m. Sunday mass, two annual concerts and other community events. Sign up for an audition time in University Ministry (AMU 236) beginning Wednesday, Aug. 23. All Marquette undergraduate or graduate students of any faith tradition welcome. In This Week in Marquette History, some Marquette students were caught in the middle in 1986 when Wisconsin raised its legal drinking age. And, last year, the Marquette community mobilized to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

This Week in Marquette History is a project of the Marquette University Department of History. Research and writing was conducted by graduate students Christopher Chan, Jess McCullough and Amanda Schmeider, with help from James Marten, professor and history department chair, and Carla Hay, associate professor and chair, 125th Anniversary Committee. Special thanks to Thomas Jablonsky, associate professor of history and director, Institute for Urban Life, who provided access to the manuscript of his forthcoming history of Marquette University

1. There will be some “mild” daytime pile driving for a sign structure south of Clybourn at about 17th Street during the first part of next week, and brief periods of sheeting removal will occur at various times during the next couple of weeks on the freeway, below 11th and Wisconsin.

2. The last beams for the new Wisconsin Avenue Bridge will be completed over the southbound lanes of I-43 overnight on Wednesday, Aug. 30. Noise levels will be minimal.

3. Carpentry work and steel reinforcing placement will take place most nights this week for the new Wisconsin Avenue Bridge deck. This work is being coordinated with freeway closures since some of this work is being done over I-43. Noise levels should be minimal.

4. The Walnut Street bridge has reopened. Due to a City of Milwaukee paving project, there will be two westbound lanes, but only one eastbound lane for several weeks.

5. Thirteenth Street underneath I-94 is closed to pedestrians. There are several hazards to pedestrians from overhead and underground. The crossing is clearly marked and fairly well protected. For your own safety, do not cross at any time!

6. Canal Street between 6th and Ember Lane will be closed overnight on Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug. 29 and 30) at midnight until 7 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. There will be limited local access from the east and west to the High Rise Bridge.

7. St. Paul Avenue will be closed between 25th and 27th Streets on Friday (Aug. 25), from midnight to 6 a.m., and on Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 28 and 29), from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
