A Message from Father Wild

As we finish the first week of classes, I welcome each of you to our 125th Anniversary Year which we celebrate under the theme of 125 Years of Faith and Learning in Action.

We find ourselves with much to applaud: record applications in dentistry and law, and for this fall’s freshman class, an advance of four places in the U.S. News & World Report rankings to No. 81 among national universities, along with a special commendation for our programs in service-learning, a top 50 ranking from the Washington Monthly, inclusion among the Princeton Review’s 361 best colleges in the country, and a great sense of excitement as we begin our second year in the Big East Conference.  In addition, earlier this summer, The Business Journal of Greater Milwaukee named Marquette University a “Great Place to Work.”

For those of us who are here on campus year ’round, there is no better time than this, when students return ready to begin the new academic year. And as I walked around campus this past weekend and watched you and your parents carry suitcases and televisions into your residence halls, apartments and houses, I thought of the many Marquette students who have taken part in this tradition during our 125 years. A great number of young people have come to this university to learn an academic discipline, to prepare themselves professionally and to grow as members of our human family. Just as they succeeded, I believe you will as well leave here well-prepared as men and women who truly will make a difference in whatever field you’ve chosen.

I hope to see you next Friday at the official celebration of our 125th Anniversary at 12:30 p.m. on Central Mall.

May our good and gracious God bless you abundantly.

President Robert A. Wild, S.J.
