1. Campus community invited to opening liturgy
The opening liturgy of the academic year, the Mass of the Holy Spirit, will be celebrated on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 4 p.m. at Gesu Church. Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., president of Marquette, will preside. A picnic will immediately follow at the AMU West Towne Square from 5 to 7 p.m.
The celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit is a tradition in Jesuit colleges and universities that dates back to Sicily in 1548.

2. Feast of the Assumption is Wednesday
University Ministry will celebrate Mass for the Feast of the Assumption at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 15, in the Chapel of the Holy Family. The liturgy is expected to last about 35 minutes for attendees to be able to attend during their lunch break.

3. Deadline to volunteer for Arrival Day is Wednesday
Arrival Day, Aug. 22, is quickly approaching and the Office of Residence Life invites the campus community to be a part of the opening day experience for our new students and help them feel welcome. Helpers are needed to serve as greeters and check-in staff, to hand out refreshments, and to help students move their belongings into their rooms. There is no set time commitment, so helpers can volunteer for as little or as long as they would like.

4. Faber Center hosting blessing and open house
Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., president of Marquette, will lead a blessing ceremony for the new home of the Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality on Wednesday, Aug. 29, at Schroeder Complex. Attendees should gather outdoors at 1:45 p.m. at the 560 N. 16th St. entrance for the 2 p.m. ceremony. The rain location will be Cramer Hall, room 104J. Tours of the second-floor center will be available immediately following the ceremony.

The Faber Center will also hold an open house with refreshments the following day, Aug. 30, from 3 to 5 p.m. Mike Hogan, director of the Faber Center, and Kathy Coffey-Guenther, associate director of the Faber Center, will provide tours and discuss how faculty and staff can benefit from the programs and retreats that will be offered during the school year.
The center is dedicated to the promotion of Ignatian spirituality among faculty and staff and named after Peter Faber. Faber was among the first companions of Ignatius Loyola and was recognized by Ignatius himself for his talent in giving the Spiritual Exercises (retreats) and his gifts as a spiritual director.
5. Graduate School of Management holding information sessions
The Graduate School of Management will hold information sessions covering curriculum, admissions requirements, application process, etc. in September and November. All sessions, except for Nov. 7, will start with a 5:30 p.m. reception followed by the 6 p.m. presentation. Sessions are:

6. D2L upgrade addresses known issues
IT Services will upgrade the D2L course management system from 8.1.1 to 8.1.3 of the application on Aug. 1314. Several known issues have been addressed in this upgrade. For more information about D2L, go online.

7. Brew Bayou closed Wednesday
The Brew Bayou will be closed on Wednesday, Aug. 15, for renovations. Einstein Bagel Bros. in Marquette Place will be open at 8 a.m. and throughout the day for coffee, bagels and pastries.

12. Haggerty Museum hosting exhibition of Louise Bourgeois’ prints
The Haggerty Museum of Art is hosting an exhibition of recent prints by the innovative French-born artist Louise Bourgeois until Sept. 30. “Louise Bourgeois, Recent Projects” features two limited-edition series in a minimalist style shown together for the first time: “Fugue,” a portfolio of 19 screenprints with lithography created in 2003, and a suite of untitled screenprints on vintage fabric from 2002.
Bourgeois has been creating art for more than eight decades in all media and continues to produce new works. A video excerpt in which Bourgeois expresses the psychological and familial motivations behind her art is shown continuously throughout the exhibition.
13. Historical society exhibit of Marquette history ends Aug. 25
The Milwaukee Historical Society exhibit honoring the 125th anniversary of Marquette University will conclude on Saturday, Aug. 25. The exhibit, at 910 N. Old World 3rd St., features “Marquette University: 125 Years of Faith and Learning in Action.”

14. News Briefs begins semi-weekly schedule next week
Beginning next week, Monday, Aug. 20, the News Briefs e-newsletter will resume its twice-a-week publication schedule. The Thursday edition will return Aug. 23. The deadline to submit articles remains at noon on Friday for Monday publication and noon Wednesday for Thursday publication.
15. Marquette Interchange highlights for the week of Aug. 13
• This will be a landmark week in the Interchange project for the university. The 11th Street "wiggle" and mall will both open this week, just in time for move-in and the start of school. The new pedestrian crossings at 11th and Wisconsin will have countdown times. Landscaping at the intersection will come later, following the installation of a watering system.
• There will be one lane closed at 11th Street and westbound Wisconsin Avenue. This lane will eventually lead to south bound I-43/eastbound I-94. The bridge for this ramp is under construction and will be finished later this fall. However, it is not expected to open until later next year.
• Wisconsin Avenue between 8th and 10th Streets will also fully open. The north roadway should have final pavement, but the south roadway will not have final pavement until later this fall.
• Night demolition will take place this weekend, south of 11th and Clybourn. Night deck pours will occur east of Straz Tower on Tuesday and Thursday, Aug. 14 and 16.
• Tory Hill/Clybourn is partially open with a single westbound lane open from 10th to 16th Streets. The eastbound roadway is still closed from 10th to 16th.
• Wisconsin Avenue is restricted to a single eastbound lane between 19th and 20th Streets. Westbound traffic between 4th and 10th Streets has temporarily moved into the eastbound roadway.
• There will be various sidewalk closures on the Wisconsin Avenue Bridge due to fence repairs. One side of the bridge will be open at all times. Please obey the signs!
