1. Campus community invited to opening liturgy
The opening liturgy of the academic year, the Mass of the Holy Spirit, will be celebrated on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 4 p.m. at Gesu Church. Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., president of Marquette, will preside. A picnic will immediately follow at the AMU West Towne Square from 5 to 7 p.m.
The celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit is a tradition in Jesuit colleges and universities that dates back to Sicily in 1548.

2. Washington Monthly and Princeton Review rank Marquette nationally
The Princeton Review and Washington Monthly magazines recently announced college rankings in which Marquette University ranked among the top universities nationally.
Marquette ranked 48th in the nation in Washington Monthly magazine’s annual College Guide, released this week. Unlike other college ranking systems, the Washington Monthly rates individual schools based on their tangible contributions to the public interest — the degree to which they recruit and graduate low-income students; produce PhDs and research; and encourage students to serve in ROTC, the Peace Corps and other service programs. In topic-specific areas, Marquette ranked seventh nationally in the percentage of students who participate in ROTC and 34th in the country for participation in the Peace Corps.
Marquette has also been named in The Princeton Review’s annual publication “Best 366 Colleges.” Only 15 percent of the four-year colleges in America and two Canadian colleges were chosen for the book. In its profile on Marquette, The Princeton Review described classes as challenging. Students in the profile said faculty are “truly top-notch and care about both teaching and research. Marquette is highly underrated for what we receive. Most professors personally care about the learning experiences of their students and make every effort to offer help or insight inside and outside of class.” The Princeton Review does not rank order the colleges but provides a two-page profile of each school.
3. Verify your entry in the printed 2007-08 Campus Directory
To ensure accurate information in the 2007-08 Campus Directory, full-time faculty, administrators and staff are asked to verify their listings for the Campus Directory. Go online and search by name. All corrections are due by noon, Friday, Aug. 31.
If your entry is not accurate or not listed, click the "Report Correction" link on the results page or contact your area’s Campus Directory keeper.
Marquette is using a new data source for the directory, the HR Oracle system. The Campus Directory publication will be delivered in early October.
4. Adjust parking for convenience of students moving in
As the Marquette community welcomes students for the 2007-08 academic year, employees are asked to adjust their parking locations for the convenience of students moving in tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 24. Parkers in lots D, F, R, RR and Structure 2 should use the top four levels of Structure 2.
Lot S parkers behind the School of Dentistry are reminded that their lot will be used for overflow parking, and the lot will likely be more congested.
5. O-Fest featuring campus organizations is Aug. 30
The Office of Student Development will sponsor the annual Organization Fest, commonly known as O-Fest, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 30, in Central Mall. O-Fest offers first-year and returning students the opportunity to learn what Marquette’s nearly 250 student organizations and several campus departments have to offer, as well as sign up for organizations.
In case of inclement weather O-Fest will be rescheduled for the following day, Friday, Aug. 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Central Mall.

6. Paintings by Wisconsin artist shown at the Haggerty Museum
The Haggerty Museum of Art exhibit of Queens and Vagabonds: Paintings by Gina Litherland, runs through Sunday, Sept. 30.
Queens and Vagabonds: Paintings by Gina Litherland features oil paintings on masonite ranging in size from 9 by 12 inches to 24 by 30 inches. Litherland employs traditional indirect oil painting techniques of building translucent layers of color to create a luminous, brilliant effect similar to those achieved by 15th century Sienese painters, combined with textural effects created by using various tools other than the paintbrush.
