1. Nominate staff for Excellence in University Service Awards

Members of the Marquette community are encouraged to submit nominations for the Excellence in University Service Awards Program. Nomination deadline is Friday, Feb. 16.

The Excellence in University Service Award Program is intended to recognize individuals for their contributions to the essential work of Marquette at the highest level of excellence. Candidates should be nominated based on meritorious service that is above and beyond the duties normally assigned to their positions. Nominees should demonstrate Ignatian ideals such as “magis” — a striving for excellence in all they do — and “cura personalis” — a personal concern and respect for others.

•  Candidates must have a minimum of five years of consecutive full-time MU service in the employee group from which selected and in which they are presently serving.

•  Administrator candidates must have at least 50 percent of their time devoted to administrative duties.

•  Self nominations or nominations by members of the Joint Committee on Employee Recognition cannot be considered.

•  Faculty members and members of the Joint Committee cannot be candidates.

Two support staff and two administrators will be selected for 2007. Plaques will be presented to this year’s award recipients at a ceremony on Tuesday, April 17. The names of the recipients will also be added to a permanent plaque in the Henke Lounge of the Alumni Memorial Union.

2. Gesu hosting Blood Drive and Chili-fest on Martin Luther King Day

Gesu Parish will host its annual Blood Drive and Chili-fest on Monday, Jan. 15, from 1 to 6 p.m. All donors will receive a chili of choice (including vegetarian) and homemade breadsticks.

Schedule an appointment by calling the Gesu office at 8-7101 or by e-mail. Walk-ins are welcome on the day of the drive.

3. Discounted tickets available for men’s basketball Jan. 13

Discounted tickets to the men’s basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 13, against West Virginia are now available to employees. Tickets normally priced at $15 are $10, and $9 tickets are just $5. Game time is 11 a.m.

4. Three-pack tickets for women's basketball just $10

Three-pack tickets for upcoming games for the nationally ranked women’s basketball team are available for just $10. Tickets for individual games start at only $4, but the $10 three-pack includes U-Conn, Villanova and Notre Dame games.

Saturday, Jan. 13 — vs. Villanova Wildcats. Wear pink in the fight against breast cancer. The first 2,000 fans receive a pink breast cancer awareness bracelet.

Tuesday, Jan. 23 — vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Wear gold and receive a free bag of popcorn.

Saturday, Feb. 3 — vs. UConn Huskies. The first 4,000 fans receive a Terri Mitchell bobble-head.

5. This Week in History

In This week in Marquette History, hippies were reported on campus, and Marquette commemorated the 100-year anniversary of the Civil War.

6. Marquette Interchange highlights for the week of Jan. 8

•  Beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 9, the eastbound lanes of Tory Hill will be closed. Next week, beginning Monday, Jan. 15, Tory Hill will be closed in both directions. For the week of Jan. 23, Tory Hill will again be open to westbound traffic only. Local traffic will be allowed from 8th and Michigan to the Rec Plex and from 16th and Clybourn for university service and delivery vehicles. Individuals parking in Lot RR will have to exit from the lot and travel east. Lot J permit holders will be able to exit south on 11th Street and travel west on Clybourn.  

•  Night work will occur at 10th and Michigan on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 8 and 9.

•  Night demolition work will occur Tuesday through Saturday (Jan. 9 to 13) on Tory Hill, between 10th and 11th Streets.

•  Piling will be driven east of O’Hara Hall over the course of the next several weeks for the new ramp to southbound I-43/94.

•  Demolition and pile-driving work south of Tory Hill/Clybourn continues. This work will take place mainly during the day and will occur periodically throughout most of the winter.

•  The sidewalk on the north side of the Wisconsin Avenue Bridge will be closed Thursday and Friday, Jan. 11 and 12.

•  Parking on the west side of 10th Street between Wisconsin Avenue and Wells Street will be eliminated on Wednesday, Jan. 10. No parking will be allowed at any time for at least two weeks.

•  Wells Street between 25th and 26th Streets will be restricted to a single lane until March due to sewer work.

•  The ramp from eastbound I-94 to northbound I-43 will be closed each night, Monday through Friday, this week (the week of January 8).  The closure will begin at 10 p.m. each night and last until 6 a.m. the following morning.

•  The Kilbourn and new Highland on ramps to northbound I-43 are both open.
