1. Attend McNair Undergraduate Research Symposium
 
Undergraduate students participating in this summer’s Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program will present their research at the 17th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on July 25 and 26. Poster presentations will take place Wednesday, July 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union, room 163, and oral presentations on Thursday, July 26, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Cudahy Hall followed by a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. The McNair Scholars program prepares eligible students for graduate school.

Dr. Buffy Smith, Arts '93, assistant professor of sociology at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minn., and an alumnus of the McNair Program, will speak on “Developing Social Capital in Graduate School” at Thursday’s luncheon.

2. IT Services upgrading e-mail this week

IT Services will begin migrating faculty and staff to Microsoft Exchange 2007 by upgrading all eMarq e-mail (Exchange 2003) to Exchange 2007 this week. Updates will be scheduled alphabetically by last name as they appear in the Global Address List and will occur overnight or over the weekend.

Check the project Web site, for up-to-date information on the scheduling of your move. You will be sent an e-mail from the Marquette postmaster the business day before your mailbox is moved (the “from line” will simply say “postmaster”).

When your move is scheduled, please:

  • empty your deleted items folder
  • close Outlook before you leave for the day

After your mailbox move you will see a slightly different interface in Outlook Web Access and Outlook 2007. Please see the project site for additional information on supported clients and new features in Outlook 2007.

3. Compendium research publication distributed this week

The next issue of Compendium, Marquette’s semiannual publication recognizing faculty research, scholarship and other achievements, is being distributed this week.

Documenting faculty achievements for the winter 2007/08 issue has already begun, so be sure that your work is included. Compiling these faculty accomplishments is an excellent way to let the campus community know about the great research taking place at Marquette, as well as allow fellow faculty to see opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration. 

If you have a 2007 accomplishment that wasn’t submitted for the spring/summer issue of Compendium, submit it online.

4. Sharpen business correspondence skills with Grow With Marquette

Learn practical and authoritative understanding of the mechanics, etiquette and style of formal business correspondence at the Grow With Marquette session “Business Writing Fundamentals for Administrative Assistants” on Thursday, July 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Raynor Memorial Libraries, Conference Room C (lower level).

Presented by Dr. Erik Thelen, executive director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, this course is specifically designed for administrative professionals who routinely prepare correspondence for department or unit managers. Participants will learn the essential elements of business writing style, prepare two traditional letter formats, manage the parts of a formal business letter, and practical tips on troubleshooting errors.

5. Help welcome students on Arrival Day

Arrival Day, Aug. 22, is now less than a month away and the Office of Residence Life invites the campus community to be a part of the opening day experience for our new students and help them feel welcome. Helpers are needed to serve as greeters and check-in staff, to hand out refreshments, and to help students move their belongings into their rooms. There is no set time commitment, so helpers can volunteer for as little or as long as they would like.

6. Haggerty Museum to host exhibition of Louise Bourgeois’ prints

The Haggerty Museum of Art will host an exhibition of recent prints by the innovative French-born artist Louise Bourgeois from July 26 to Sept. 30. “Louise Bourgeois, Recent Projects” features two limited-edition series in a minimalist style that will be shown together for the first time: “Fugue,” a portfolio of 19 screenprints with lithography created in 2003, and a suite of untitled screenprints on vintage fabric from 2002.

The 12 untitled screenprints in this exhibition are part of a suite of 25 limited edition prints on vintage fabric; each square of fabric was cut from a sheet once used by the artist's three sons. They are inspired by earlier drawings and a more recent series titled “The Woven Drawings” created from the artist’s old clothes. The blood-red serigraphed prints are both vertical and horizontal in format and hand-stitched to mat board.

Bourgeois has been creating art for more than eight decades in all media and continues to produce new works. A video excerpt in which Bourgeois expresses the psychological and familial motivations behind her art will be shown continuously throughout the exhibition.

7. Attend Mass for the Feast of St. Ignatius

The office of University Advancement invites the Marquette community to Mass for the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Tuesday, July 31. Mass will be celebrated by Rev. Frank Majka, University Ministry, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Family on the second floor of AMU.

8. Help celebrate 30th anniversary of Brigg’s & Al’s Run

Join the Marquette community and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in celebrating the 30th Annual Briggs & Al’s Run & Walk on Saturday, Sept. 15. Register online to be part of the Marquette University team or other MU teams. Enter “MU” to search for all university teams; the password for the general MU team is “murahrah.” For more information, stop by the Event Management Office, AMU 245.

The event was founded by former Marquette basketball coach Al McGuire and has raised more than $7 million for the hospital to fund medical care, research and education.

9. Marquette Interchange highlights for the week of July 23

• Tory Hill/Clybourn between 10th and 16th streets will partially re-open, to only westbound traffic, at 5 p.m. Friday, July 27. From 10th to 11th streets traffic will be shifted into the eastbound roadway as work on the north side of Tory Hill continues. Eastbound Clybourn will remain closed to through-traffic at 16th Street, with local and university traffic only between 16th and 13th streets. Right turns only will be allowed at 11th and Clybourn. Use caution because there will now be cross-traffic from the east.
 
• Test piles will be driven north of Tory Hill and east of 11th Street for the new southbound I-43 bridge, over Tory Hill, on Thursday, July 26. The following week the last pilings north of Tory Hill will also be driven there.
 
• St. Paul will be closed both directions from 5th to 13th streets:  
Monday, July 23, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Tuesday, July 24, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Wednesday, July 25, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Thursday, July 26, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
                                               
• Canal Street from 6th Street to Emmber Lane is open with no scheduled closures.

• Wisconsin Avenue is restricted to a single eastbound lane between 19th and 20th streets. Westbound traffic on Wisconsin between 4th and 10th streets has temporarily moved into the eastbound roadway, and there is no left turn for eastbound traffic at 11th Street until city traffic signals are operational. The north sidewalk on Wisconsin Avenue between 10th and 12th streets is now open.

• 20th Street from Highland to North Avenue is restricted to a single, southbound lane due to paving.

• Cherry Street between 2nd Street and King Drive is closed in both directions.

• University work will begin later this summer on a new retaining wall and modifications to Lot R behind Straz Tower, including new sidewalks and campus identification elements. Tenth Street at Michigan will become the gateway to the university from the south later next year.

• 9th Street is closed at Wisconsin Avenue. 9th Street is open from Wells, but if you enter at Wells you will have to turn around and exit to Wells. There is no through passage to Wisconsin Avenue.
