1. Interim dean appointed for College of Nursing

Provost Madeline Wake today named Dr. Ellen B. Rudy interim dean of the Marquette University College of Nursing, effective next month. She succeeds Dr. Lea Accord, who returned to faculty status July 1.

Rudy is currently a senior consultant for the National Institute of Health and holds a part-time faculty appointment at Ohio State University. She was dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing from 1991 to 2001.

Wake said Rudy would serve through the fall 2007 semester while the university conducts a national search. “We are indeed fortunate to attract this national leader as interim dean,” Wake said. “I expect her to continue development of our strong undergraduate and graduate programs and to advance faculty research.”

Rudy is a graduate of Ohio State University and has master’s degrees in public administration from the University of Dayton and in nursing from the University of Maryland. She earned her Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University.

During her tenure at the University of Pittsburgh, the School of Nursing repeatedly ranked high in NIH levels of research funding. She initiated an award program recognizing excellence in bedside nursing, Cameos of Caring, which is now used in 37 Pittsburgh hospitals and three additional university settings. She has also been the principal investigator on five NIH-funded projects.

Rudy has published widely in professional journals and co-authored several textbooks. She has received numerous honors from professional organizations, including being named a “Living Legend” by the American Academy of Nursing.

2. Volunteer to help with International Teaching Assistant Program

The Office of International Education is seeking student volunteers to help with the International Teaching Assistant Program from Monday, Aug. 13, to Friday, Aug. 17.

The International TA Program helps prepare new international teaching assistants for their TA role at Marquette. This program, which is mandatory for all new international TAs, provides workshops designed to introduce and review the skills the international TAs need to interact with American undergraduate students. Topics include university culture, teacher/student roles, presentation skills, classroom management and culture shock.

Student volunteers are specifically needed to serve on a student panel to share their Marquette experiences and help as conversation facilitators on a cultural trip to Lake Michigan and Alterra at the Lake.

For more information contact Jean Czaja at 8-0721 by Wednesday, Aug. 8.

4. Paintings by Wisconsin artist shown at the Haggerty Museum

The Haggerty Museum of Art will open Queens and Vagabonds: Paintings by GinaLitherland, an exhibition of 17 oil paintings by Wisconsin artist Gina Litherland on Thursday, July 26, with a 6 p.m. talk by the artist followed by a reception. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs through Oct. 1.

Queens and Vagabonds: Paintings by GinaLitherland features oil paintings on masonite ranging in size from 9 by 12 inches to 24 by 30 inches. Litherland employs traditional indirect oil painting techniques of building translucent layers of color to create a luminous, brilliant effect similar to those achieved by 15th century Sienese painters, combined with textural effects created by using various tools other than the paintbrush. These techniques allow Litherland to create a detailed, layered and complex surface of images.

Litherland studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her paintings, drawings and articles have been published worldwide in journals and periodicals associated with the international surrealist movement.
