1. Support Marquette athletics this weekend

The 2007-08 Marquette University men's and women's basketball campaigns will officially begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, when the teams host their annual "Marquette Madness" event at the Al McGuire Center. The event, which is designed to introduce the latest edition of the squads to the Golden Eagle faithful, will feature contests, promotions, giveaways and more. Free, limited edition "Marquette Madness" throwback blue T-shirts will be distributed to all fans in attendance. The Golden Eagles will be introduced to the crowd and compete in scrimmages. The men's team will also conduct a dunk contest. Tickets for the Marquette men’s basketball season are also still available. For more information, call 8-3030.

With a 10-2-1 record, the Marquette women’s soccer team will wrap up their regular season home schedule with games against St. John’s tomorrow, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., and Syracuse on Sunday, Oct. 14, at noon. Friday is “Senior Night,” with the team’s nine seniors being honored at a pre-game ceremony. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free Marquette Soccer T-shirt.

Marquette volleyball is looking for fans to “pack the Al” on Friday, Oct. 12, against Notre Dame at 7 p.m. It’s also Dollar Day at the Al McGuire Center, meaning tickets, hot dogs, soda and popcorn will each cost a dollar. Students can win prizes valued at more than $500. The Golden Eagles will wrap up their homestand against DePaul at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

2. ESPN.com executive to speak about technology and fan expectations

Rob King, vice president and editor-in-chief of ESPN.com, will present the 2007 Pete and Bonnie Axthelm Lecture, “The Wild, Wild Web: How Technology and Fan Expectations are Driving Change at ESPN.com.”

This free, public lecture will take place today, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in Cudahy 001. King, who has worked as a graphic artist, editor and cartoonist, has nearly 22 years of newspaper experience.

3. Wifredo Lam exhibition opens today

The Haggerty Museum of Art will host an exhibition of the first American retrospective of Cuba’s best-known surrealist, Wifredo Lam, from today, Oct. 11, 2007, to Jan. 21, 2008. Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims, adjunct curator, Studio Museum of Harlem and visiting professor, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and Hunter College, will deliver the opening lecture, “Wifredo Lam and the New York Art Scene,” at 6 p.m. today, followed by a reception. The event is free and open to the public.

“Wifredo Lam in North America” features more than 60 drawings and paintings from North American collections that best represent the different phases of Lam’s career. The exhibition includes works from North American museums, galleries and private collections across the United States and the Caribbean.

4. President of Jellyfish.com to speak about business start-up

Mark McGuire, co-founder and president of shopping search engine Jellyfish.com, will present “The Jellyfish.com Story: How to Sell Your Start-Up in 20 Months,” today, Oct. 11, at 5:30 p.m. in Todd Wehr Chemistry 100.

Jellyfish.com has generated millions of dollars of sales for its merchant partners since its launch in June 2006. The company, now wholly owned by Microsoft Corporation, is based in Middleton, Wis. McGuire will speak about the Jellyfish.com idea, commercialization and sale to Microsoft.

5. Jim Lehrer and Tim Hoeksema hosted by Law School

PBS News Anchor Jim Lehrer and Midwest Airlines CEO Tim Hoeksema will be hosted by the Law School at upcoming “On the Issues with Mike Gousha” forums.

Lehrer will talk about his experiences in journalism and the changing media world from noon to 1 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 12, in Sensenbrenner Hall 310. Lehrer is an acclaimed journalist, popular host of PBS’s NewsHour nightly newscast, moderator of presidential debates and the author of more than a dozen books, His appearance will also be broadcast by Channel 10 from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.  

Hoeksema, who runs Milwaukee’s popular hometown airline, offers his unique perspective on the efforts to buy Midwest and the sometimes competing interests of shareholders, employees and communities on Wednesday, Oct. 17, Sensenbrenner Hall 310, from noon to 1 p.m.

6. University welcomes open house visitors

A variety of activities and events will take place during Marquette’s open house on Sunday, Oct. 14. The open house is designed to give high school seniors a feeling for what life at Marquette is like. They’ll explore the campus, identify academic interests, meet faculty and current students and learn what it takes to be admitted to Marquette University.

7. Teach-in this weekend to address social justice

The student organization JUSTICE is sponsoring a social justice teach-in on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will feature a presentation by torture survivor Hector Aristizabal (see next article), a Nia class with Core El Centro, a performance by African dancers Brandon and Kate Bradley and other events. Activities will take place in the Todd Wehr Chemistry Building 002, 003, 009, 113 and 112.

Participants can attend any events they choose and are not required to stay all day. Free refreshments will be provided.

8. Torture survivor to speak and perform

Hector Aristizabal, cofounder of the Los Angeles Theatre of the Oppressed, Colombian Children’s Peace Fund and the Colombian Peace Project, will speak at the Soup with Substance lunch on Monday, Oct. 15, at noon in the Weasler Auditorium.

A native of Medellin, Colombia, Aristizabal relocated to Pasadena, Calif., after his human rights work forced him to leave his country in 1989 due to torture and death threats. As a psychologist, actor and torture-survivor, he has dedicated his life to human rights and healing work.

Aristizabal will present two one-man plays, NIGHTWIND and The IN-TEA-RRO-R-GATOR on Monday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Weasler Auditorium. The performances depict Hector’s experiences of terror and torture in his home country of Colombia. The performances are free and open to the public and will be followed by a discussion about violence.

The programs are sponsored by JUSTICE, University Ministry and the Manresa Project.

9. Free showing of Thomas Merton documentary

The Manresa Project will show Soul Searching: The Journey of Thomas Merton, on Monday, Oct. 15, at 4:30 p.m. in Marquette Hall 100. The documentary is 75 minutes and will be followed by a talkback with the film’s producer, Morgan Atkinson. The event is free and open to the public.

10. Study abroad documentation due Monday

All students studying abroad in spring 2008 need to turn in their completed paperwork by Monday, Oct. 15, to the Office of International Education, AMU 425. The list of required documents can be found online.

Monday is also the final day to apply for the spring 2008 “Marquette en Madrid” program and the fall 2008 South Africa Service Learning program.

11. Learn about international affairs graduate programs

Representatives from Georgetown University’s Master of Science in Foreign Service, Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies and Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School will discuss graduate programs in international affairs on Tuesday, Oct. 16, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the OIE Program Center, AMU 407.

Representatives will discuss admissions, financial aid, career advisement, joint degrees and preparation for graduate school. Students interested in international affairs are welcome. E-mail for more information.

12. Health professionals career fair held next week

The Health Professionals Career Fair will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. in the AMU ballrooms. Information about careers in athletic training, biomedical engineering, biomedical science, clinical lab science, exercise science, nursing, physical therapy and speech pathology will be available. Students should bring their resume, wear professional attire and be prepared to network.

13. Milwaukee native to speak on physics of NASCAR®

Dr. Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, a Milwaukee native and associate professor of physics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will speak about her new book, The Physics of NASCAR®, on Friday, Oct. 26, at 5:30 p.m. in Weasler Auditorium. Leslie-Pelecky’s presentation is the keynote address of the Wisconsin Association of Physics Teachers statewide meeting Oct. 26 and 27 at Marquette, hosted by Melissa Vigil, physics laboratory supervisor and vice president of the association. The speech and other talks and workshops are free and open to the public.

14. Win an iPod from Late Night Marquette

Craig Karges will read minds, bend metal and make objects float at Late Night Marquette tomorrow, Oct. 12, from 9 to 10:30 p.m. Learn more on the Late Night Marquette Web site, where students can also register to win an iPod. 

Bingo, an acoustic circle, a Tiger Woods Wii tournament, a caricature artist and board games will follow the Karges performance, until 1 a.m.

15. Habitat for Humanity organizing spring break trip

Marquette’s Habitat for Humanity will hold three informational meetings about its spring break trip:

Wednesday, Oct. 24, 9 p.m. in Cudahy 118

 In the past, Marquette’s group has traveled to Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi and Oklahoma to build houses.

16. Hunger Clean-Up leadership applications available

Applications for Hunger Clean-Up’s co-coordinator, committee chair and committee member positions are due on Monday, Oct. 22, by 4:30 p.m., to the Center for Community Service, Office of Student Development, AMU 329. Applications are available in the office and online.

Hunger Clean-Up is Marquette's largest annual one-day service project, drawing more than 1,500 volunteers and raising more than $20,000 for local service agencies annually. Committee members are needed to plan the one-day event, as well as additional events that advocate for hunger and homelessness issues and fund-raising events.

17. Learn personal finance skills at Marquette Money $mart Days

Students are invited to participate in Marquette Money $mart Days to learn about credit cards, conquering credit, budgeting, saving and investment strategies, identity theft, insurance, building wealth and more.

Instructors and representatives from a variety of financial organizations will host sessions from noon to 6 p.m. in the AMU from Monday, Oct. 22, to Thursday, Oct. 25.

The programs are sponsored by the Office of the Bursar.

18. Women’s Leadership Conference looking for female leaders

The Office of Student Development is looking for 13 to 15 enthusiastic, creative, hard-working female undergraduate students to form a planning committee for the annual Women’s Leadership Conference, Saturday, April 5, 2008. Committee members will work with the program coordinators and university offices to develop a conference theme and help coordinate the conference schedule, events, speakers, participants and volunteers.

Applications are available in the LEAD Center and the Office of Student Development, AMU first floor, beginning tomorrow, Oct. 12, and due Friday, Oct. 26, at 4:30 p.m.

19. Colleges Against Cancer receives awards

Marquette’s Colleges Against Cancer group was named the “Chapter of the Year” for the Midwest division and was given the “Leaders of Hope” award at the Midwest Youth Summit in Minneapolis in September. The Chapter of the Year award is given to groups showing excellence in leadership and creativity. The “Leaders of Hope” is a national award that was given to 20 of CAC’s 350 chapters that demonstrate leadership in education, advocacy, survivorship and the Relay for Life event.

20. Collect pink Yoplait Yogurt lids for breast cancer research

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Center for Health Education and Promotion is collecting Yoplait Yogurt lids for the national breast cancer fund-raiser, “Save Lids to Save Lives,” throughout October. Yoplait Yogurt lids can be brought to residence halls, the AMU Information Desk, or the Office of Health Education and Promotion.

For each pink lid collected, Yoplait donates 10 cents to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

21. Tell your story at a StoryCorps interview 

Marquette University and the Ethnic Alumni Association have partnered with StoryCorps Milwaukee to record the experiences of local citizens. A StoryCorps interview is a 40-minute conversation between two people who know each other. A trained facilitator leads the conversational interview and handles all aspects of the recording process.

Participants receive an audio CD of their interview and, with their permission, copies are sent to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Interview segments may also appear on National Public Radio.

Anyone can participate in StoryCorps, no matter his/her age, ethnicity or relationship between participants. Interviews will take place at the Milwaukee Public Library’s Central Branch, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., on Wednesdays from 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Jan. 25, 2008.
