1. Marquette recognized by the Princeton Review

Marquette University is recognized in the 2009 “368 Best Colleges” by the Princeton Review. Only about 15 percent of America’s 2,500 four-year colleges and two Canadian colleges are recognized in the book.

The 368 schools are rated based on a 120,000-student survey administered by the Princeton Review that covers a range of topics from academics to campus life. Students surveyed praised Marquette for being “a small campus in a big city with a big heart,” and having a “comfortable atmosphere.” Students also felt that Marquette provides a well-balanced experience, “a happy medium between working hard academically, making great friends while having a good social life, and getting prepared for life after college.” Other areas that received praise were the accessibility of professors, access to computer labs and the “generous financial aid packages.”

3. D2L unavailable Aug. 12

D2L, the university’s course management system, will be unavailable due to maintenance for a period Tuesday, Aug. 12. Monitor the D2L Web site for specific down times.

4. University Ministry is now Campus Ministry

University Ministry officially became Campus Ministry as of Aug. 1. The change was made to more clearly communicate the spiritual, religious and pastoral support the office provides to students as part of its mission, according to Campus Ministry. The name “Campus Ministry” is also used by many similar offices throughout higher education.

Offices and departments are asked to update all materials and Web sites with this new name.

5. Changes in the Office of Student Development

Dr. Mark McCarthy has left his position at Marquette to become vice president for Student Affairs at John Carroll University. A search for a replacement will begin by the start of the spring semester.

During the interim, Dr. Stephanie Quade, senior associate dean of Student Development, and Dr. Jon Dooley, associate dean of Student Development, will assume additional responsibilities. The staff in the two Student Development office locations express their commitment to continuing to carry out the vision of the Office of Student Development.

6. Library books must be renewed or returned

All books checked out from the Raynor Memorial general collection that are due Aug. 9 must be renewed or returned. If renewed, the new due date will be Aug. 8, 2009. If you have already renewed your books, there is no need to repeat this process. As a courtesy to other users, please return items no longer needed.

To renew items on your account, go to the Raynor Memorial Libraries Web site, select “Your library record” under the “Services” column, and enter your first and last name and the 14-digit Marquette Card barcode number from your MUID. Then, go to “Items currently checked out” and choose “Renew All” or click the “Renew” button next to individual titles and choose “Renew selected items.”

After Sept. 10, 2008, you will have to bring the books to the library for renewal. For more information, call the Circulation Department at 8-7555. Faculty with authorized assistants should call the Circulation Department to renew any material checked out to those records, or to transfer materials to personal records.

7. FSAs and other benefits addressed in Grow with Marquette session

A Grow with Marquette session Thursday, Aug. 7, will cover ways to maximize Marquette University benefits from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Raynor Memorial Library Beaumier Suite A. Content will include how enrolling in a flexible spending account can lower out-of-pocket expenses; how the Lab Card program can help save on lab services; how to add value to the $120 annual vision benefit, and more.

Call Human Resources at 8-7305 to register. Space is limited.

8. O-Fest tables available for offices and departments

University offices and departments are invited to participate in the annual Organization Fest, commonly known as O-Fest, sponsored by the Office of Student Development, from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, in Central Mall. O-Fest offers first-year and returning students the opportunity to learn more about Marquette’s offices, departments and student organizations and sign up for those of interest.

E-mail Kate Trevey, coordinator for student organizations and leadership in the Office of Student Development, to register for a table. A limited number of tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for Friday, Aug. 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Central Mall.

12. Marquette Interchange highlights for the week of Aug. 4

• Three new ramps are now open — northbound I-94/43 to westbound I-94, which now exits and merges from the right, whereas the old ramp was to the left; the connector ramp from Northbound I-43/94 to eastbound on I-794; and the on-ramp to westbound I-94 at Lovell and Clybourn, accessed from 6th and Clybourn.

• The Tory Hill, Clybourn, Michigan closure, restrictions and detours will remain in place until Aug. 15.
