1. Mass of the Holy Spirit, Welcome Back Picnic Sunday
Marquette University President Robert A. Wild, S.J., invites the Marquette community to help celebrate the beginning of the academic year at the Mass of the Holy Spirit on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m. at Gesu Church. The 18th annual All-University Welcome Back Picnic will follow at the Alumni Memorial Union and Westowne Square from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine. Casual dress is appropriate.

2. Dr. John Pauly to be formally welcomed at reception
A welcome reception for Dr. John Pauly, provost, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Patrick and Beatrice Haggerty Museum of Art. Pauly, former dean of the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication, was named provost last spring.
The program will begin at 4:30 p.m. and be emceed by Dr. William Thorn, chair of the Department of Journalism, Diederich College of Communication.

3. First dean of School of Education passes away
Dr. Frank L. Steeves, the first dean of the School of Education, died Aug. 15, 2008, at age 86. He earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Boston University and taught for more than 20 years at Marquette. He served as chair of Marquette’s Department of Education from 1969 to 1971 before serving as dean from 1971 from 1975.
He was the author of six books and many articles on teacher education and was nationally known for his expertise on curriculum in secondary education. He also served as president of Phi Delta Kappa at Marquette and as president of the School Masters Association of Wisconsin. Steeves retired in 1987.

4. D2L training available next week
Introductory training to D2L, Marquette’s course management system, will be held Friday, Aug. 29, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in Raynor 320H.
5. Department of Biomedical Sciences hosting three seminars
The Department of Biomedical Sciences in the College of Health Sciences will host seminars with guest speakers:
Monday, Aug. 25
Dr. Brandy Wilkinson, Alzheimer Research Laboratory of Case Western Reserve University, will present "Microglia as a source of oxidative stress in Alzheimer’s disease.”
Wednesday, Aug. 27
Dr. Qingchun Tong, Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, will present “Dissecting neural pathways in the hypothalamus controlling energy homeostasis.”
Wednesday, Sept. 3
Dr. Robert Wheeler, Department of Psychology, University North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will present “The neural regulation of negative affect in a model of cocaine seeking.”
