1. CheckMarq unavailable during final upgrade
CheckMarq, the student information system, will be unavailable during the final stage of its upgrade from 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, through 1 p.m. Monday, July 28.
During this time all electronic processing by the Office of Student Financial Aid and the Office of the Bursar will be suspended. Check cashing, petty cash reimbursement, payment processing, change processing, departmental deposit processing and Western Union services will be unavailable. Departmental deposits dropped off during this time will be processed after July 28. Cash deposits can still be processed.
The Office of the Registrar’s services will also be unavailable during this time, including processing transcript requests, enrollment verifications, degree verifications, RTS forms and transfer and test credits. All processing requests must be submitted by the end of business July 22. Requests submitted July 23-30 will be processed beginning July 30. All registration activity will also be suspended. Grades for the Undergraduate, Graduate and Health Sciences Professional Summer Session 3 are due Wednesday, July 30, at noon, rather than July 28 as previously announced.
CheckMarq is being upgraded to provide students with improved functionality. The preview is available online.
2. Annual Support Staff Appreciation Luncheon is tomorrow
All employees classified as “staff” are invited to the Annual Support Staff Appreciation Luncheon tomorrow, July 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the AMU Monaghan Ballroom. No RSVP is needed.
3. Dr. Keenan Grenell accepts position at Colgate University
The Office of the Provost will host a farewell reception for Dr. Keenan Grenell, associate provost for diversity and associate professor of political science, Monday, Aug. 4, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Henke Lounge, AMU. The formal program with remarks will begin at 4 p.m. Grenell has resigned, effective Aug. 21, to accept the position of vice president and dean of diversity at Colgate University, Hamilton, NY. Grenell joined Marquette in June 2005 after leaving Auburn University.
As associate provost for diversity, Grenell chaired Marquette’s Diversity Advisory Committee; conducted diversity training for the University Leadership Council and mid-level managers; assisted in the expansion of the institution’s outreach to the Ethnic Alumni Association through participation in reunions and dialogue dinner opportunities; and facilitated recruitment efforts for minority faculty on campus, among other accomplishments.
Grenell also serves as President of the Keenan D. Grenell African-American Entrepreneurship Summit, Inc.; President of the Grenell Development Group; President of the Legacy Foundation; co-chaired the Regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math White Paper for Southeastern Wisconsin; chairs the Accreditation Board for the Institute for the Transformation of Learning; and is involved in many other community and national organizations.
In announcing Grenell’s resignation to the University Leadership Council earlier this month, Dr. David Shrock, interim provost, praised Grenell’s expertise and ability to keep diversity “in the forefront of our thoughts and actions.” He said Marquette would “continue our commitment to diversity.”

4. Journalism history expert named Nieman Chair
Dr. Bonnie S. Brennen, previously professor of journalism and vice provost of academic affairs at Temple University, is the new Nieman Chair in the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication.
As Nieman Chair, Brennen will be responsible for organizing the Nieman Symposia and Nieman Lecture Series. Dr. John Pauly, dean of the college and new provost, said Brennen will also teach an undergraduate course in ethics and a graduate seminar in communication theory. Pauly said Brennen brings a “wealth of scholarship in the areas of journalism history and cultural studies” to the position.
The Nieman Chair was endowed in honor of Lucius W. Nieman, who founded the Milwaukee Journal in 1882 at age 24 and served as the paper’s long-time editor-in-chief.
Brennen served on the faculty at the University of Missouri, Virginia Commonwealth University and SUNY Geneseo, after earning her Ph.D. at the University of Iowa. She is the author of For the Record: An Oral History of Rochester, New York Newsworkers and the co-editor of Picturing the Past: Media, History and Photography and Newsworkers: Towards a History of the Rank and File. She has also published numerous book chapters and articles in professional journals and has received a number of teaching and research awards.
5. McNair Undergraduate Research to be presented Wednesday
Undergraduate students participating in the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program this summer will present their research at the 18th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium this week. Poster presentations will be Wednesday, July 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. in AMU 227. Oral presentations will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 24, throughout Cudahy Hall.
Limited seating is also available for a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Dr. Davarian L. Baldwin, associate professor of history and African diaspora studies at Boston College and an alumnus of Marquette’s McNair Program, will speak at the luncheon.

6. Farewell reception scheduled for Dr. Mark McCarthy
The campus is invited to a farewell reception for Dr. Mark McCarthy, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of student development, Tuesday, July 29, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Lunda Room/Henke Lounge of the AMU. McCarthy has accepted a new position as vice president for student affairs at John Carroll University in Cleveland.

7. Union Station to close temporarily
Union Station, AMU, will close for recarpeting from Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. While Union Station is closed, Marquette Card Services will be temporarily relocated to AMU 157 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Mail services, UPS services, Milwaukee County Transit System tickets, Coach USA/WI Coach tickets, faxing and AMU locker rentals will not be available.
Alternate post office locations are located at the intersection of 12th Street and Highland Avenue and the intersection of Fourth Street & St. Paul Avenue. MCTS bus tickets can be purchased at the Milwaukee County Courthouse (901 N. Ninth St., room 105), Express and Gifts (633 W. Wisconsin Ave.) and Grand Avenue Market (612 W. Wisconsin Ave.) UPS services are available at the UPS branch at 544 E. Ogden Ave.
8. Library books must be renewed or returned
All books checked out from the Raynor Memorial general collection that are due Aug. 9 must be renewed or returned. If renewed, the new due date will be Aug. 8, 2009. If you have already renewed your books, there is no need to repeat this process. As a courtesy to other users, please return items no longer needed.
To renew items on your account, go to the Raynor Memorial Libraries Web site, select “Your library record” under the “Services” column, and enter your first and last name and the 14-digit Marquette Card barcode number from your MUID. Then, go to “Items currently checked out” and choose “Renew All” or click the “Renew” button next to individual titles and choose “Renew selected items.”
After Sept. 10, 2008, you will have to bring the books to the library for renewal. For more information, call the Circulation Department at 8-7555. Faculty with authorized assistants should call the Circulation Department to renew any material checked out to those records, or to transfer materials to personal records.
9. Haggerty Museum of Art to showcase photographer Stephen Shore
The Patrick & Beatrice Haggerty Museum of Art will host Biographical Landscape: The Photography of Stephen Shore, 1969–1979, from Thursday, July 24, to Sunday, Sept. 28. The exhibition will feature more than 100 prints by Shore, known for transforming quintessential American scenes into uncommon places that seem frozen in space and time.
The exhibition will open July 24, with a 6 p.m. lecture by Shore in Cudahy Hall 001. A reception at the museum will follow. For more information, call 8-7290.

10. Annex holding Brewers Tailgate
The Annex will hold its second annual Brewers Tailgate on Friday, Aug. 8, including a buffet at the Annex at 4 p.m. A shuttle will depart for Miller Park at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served at Miller Park until the Brewers play the Washington Nationals at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for the event are limited. Talk to Annex staff or call 8-7769 to purchase tickets. Cost is $25 per ticket and includes a T-shirt.
11. Marquette Interchange highlights for the week of July 21
• Numerous exit and entrance ramps will be closed this week on east and south portions of the interchange for preparatory work on the new southbound lanes from Fond du Lac. This work will continue until Saturday, July 26.
• All work on the eastbound through lanes of the new Interchange will be completed tonight, July 21, complete the final east/west alignment process.
• The final Get-Around-Guide for the interchange project is available and includes information on how to use the new interchange. Copies are available in both parking structures, the AMU and by calling 8-1463.
