2. Marquette recognized for sustainability initiatives

In its second national report card on sustainability efforts, the National Wildlife Federation recognized Marquette University for sustainability efforts in five categories, the most categories of any school in Wisconsin.

Marquette was one of 334 colleges and universities recognized by the NWF based on a national survey administered by Princeton Survey Research Associates International, judging schools in 18 different categories. With 27 percent of U.S. colleges or universities responding, including 33 Wisconsin schools, the 2008 survey is the nation’s largest study to date created to gauge trends and new developments in campus sustainability, according to NWF.

The five categories Marquette is recognized in are: energy efficiency, conservation and renewable energy; more than 80 percent of energy from off campus renewable; plans to do more with transportation programs; recycling, solid waste and materials flow; and plans to do more with green landscaping and grounds.

“In the last several years Marquette has invested $7 million in energy and water efficiency improvements, which saved roughly 1.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 13.5 million gallons of water on campus,” said Mike Whittow, assistant to the vice president in Marquette’s Office of Administration. “We are also working toward a goal of recycling 30 percent of our waste.”

To help further Marquette’s efforts, a Sustainability Task Force has been created with faculty, staff and student representatives

3. Wisconsin Avenue impassable during Harley Davidson parade

Approximately 7,500 motorcycles will pass down Wisconsin Avenue on Saturday, Aug. 30, for the Harley Davidson 105th Anniversary Parade. The parade will be led by the Parade of Muscular Dystrophy Association Heroes as it makes its way from Miller Park to the Henry Maier Festival Park.

Wisconsin Avenue will be closed at 8:30 a.m. from Miller Park to Milwaukee Street. The parade is expected to last for three hours, and the motorcyclists are expected to reach Marquette’s campus between 9 and 9:45 a.m. Sidewalks will be open to spectators, but students, employees and visitors will be unable to cross Wisconsin Avenue during the parade.

4. Provide personal contact information for emergency text messages

All students are strongly encouraged to update their personal contact information, including cell phone numbers, with the Office of the Registrar by Tuesday, Sept. 2.

The information is used by university staff to contact students for university business or emergencies and also provides the database for the Campus Directory. Cell phone numbers are not published.

In the event of a school closing or university emergency that presents an imminent danger, all students who have provided their cell phone numbers to the Office of the Registrar through CheckMarq will receive text and/or voicemail messages from Marquette through Jyngle, a Milwaukee mobile messaging service.

The CheckMarq page includes explicit instructions for accessing Student Self-Service within CheckMarq. Log on to CheckMarq, enter the Student Center and select “Addresses” or “Phone Numbers” from the drop-down menu in the “Personal Information” section.
