1. Finalists for dean of the Diederich College of Communication identified

Five finalists for dean of the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication will visit Marquette in January or February. They are:

• Dr. Laurence B. Alexander, associate dean, The Graduate School, University of Florida;
• Dr. Lori Bergen, director, School of Journalism & Mass Communication, Texas State University;
• Dr. Susan Schultz Huxman, director, Elliott School of Communication, Wichita State University;
• Dr. Steve Jones, associate dean, Liberal Arts & Sciences, University of Illinois at Chicago; and
• Dr. Eric Rothenbuhler, professor of communication, Texas A&M University.

Dr. Ana Garner, chair of the search committee, said the candidates will visit the university in mid-January to early February. Their visits will include meetings with faculty and students from the Diederich College of Communication, as well as conversations with university officials.

Dr. Rothenbuhler will be on campus Jan. 14 and 15, Dr. Huxman Jan. 20 and 21, Dr. Alexander Jan. 26 and 27, Dr. Jones Jan. 28 and 29 and Dr. Bergen Feb. 11 and 12.

“This is a pool of extraordinary educators,” Garner said. “The quality of candidate we were able to attract speaks well of the reputation that Marquette and the Diederich College have. We offer candidates not only a distinguished history but also a vision for the future and the resources to help achieve it.”

2. Today is last day to register for vacant house watch

The Department of Public Safety encourages students residing in the nearby off-campus neighborhood to take advantage of its Vacant House Watch. Students can register their residences with Public Safety prior to leaving campus for Christmas break and DPS officers will monitor the vacant residences during routine patrols. The information provided to Public Safety remains strictly confidential. Students must complete a form, which is available online, and return it to Public Safety by today, Dec. 22.

Students concerned about leaving their vehicles unattended can also obtain free on-campus parking during the break. Students can register vehicles and obtain a parking pass with Parking Services after their last final exam. For more information, contact Parking Services at 8-6911.

3. Jesuit Portrait Gallery selections on display at Raynor

A selection of portraits from the recently digitized complete collection of illustrations contained within Alfred Hamy’s Galerie Illustrée de la Compagnie de Jésus (Paris: 1893) is on display on the third floor of Raynor Library until Friday, Jan. 30, 2009. The original eight-volume set is preserved within the Raynor Memorial Libraries rare book collection, and the complete digitized collection is available online.
