1. College of Health Sciences holding Undergraduate Research Day
The College of Health Sciences Summer Research Program will hold its Fifth Annual Student Research Day on Friday, Aug. 1, in AMU Ballrooms C and D. Students will present their research findings in poster presentations from 9 to 10:15 a.m. and from 10:45 to noon. Dr. William Cullinan, dean of the College of Health Sciences, will give a keynote address between the two sessions.
The competitive summer research program consists of 25 students who conducted biomedical research projects in the laboratories of 15 faculty mentors from the Departments of Biomedical Sciences, Physical Therapy and Clinical Laboratory Sciences and the Program in Exercise Sciences. This year’s participants also include underrepresented students who were selected and funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse through its Summer Research with NIDA Program.

2. New director named for Center for Supply Chain Management
The College of Business Administration has named Douglas A. Fisher, D.B.A., director of the Center for Supply Chain Management in the Department of Management. Fisher will join Marquette Aug. 20 from Auburn University in Alabama, where he has taught since 2005. Fisher is also a partner at Cascade Consulting Partners, Inc., a management consulting firm in Eugene, Ore., specializing in enterprise profit optimization. He will bring with him more than 30 years of practical business experience in the freight transportation industry.
Fisher’s responsibilities will include teaching in the areas of operations and supply management, working with students and local businesses to support internships and student activities, and overseeing center operations, including fostering relationships with supply chain professionals and developing outreach activities.
Marquette’s Center for Supply Chain Management is an industry-university collaborative venture for education, research and information sharing of supply chain management strategies, concepts, business practices and solution systems for manufacturing and service firms.
3. Upgraded CheckMarq now available
The upgraded version of CheckMarq, the student information system, is available beginning today, July 28. The Offices of the Bursar, Financial Aid, Registrar and Admissions are also fully operational for all services.
CheckMarq has been upgraded to provide students with improved functionality. For more information, visit online or contact the Help Desk.
4. Union Station closed this week
Union Station, AMU, will be closed for recarpeting from today, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. While Union Station is closed, Marquette Card Services will temporarily relocate to AMU 157 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Mail services, UPS services, Milwaukee County Transit System tickets, Coach USA/WI Coach tickets, faxing and AMU locker rentals will not be available.
Alternate post office locations are located at the intersection of 12th Street and Highland Avenue and the intersection of Fourth Street and St. Paul Avenue. MCTS bus tickets can be purchased at the Milwaukee County Courthouse (901 N. Ninth St., room 105), Express and Gifts (633 W. Wisconsin Ave.) and Grand Avenue Market (612 W. Wisconsin Ave.) UPS services are available at the UPS branch at 544 E. Ogden Ave.
5. College of Professional Studies hosting information sessions
The College of Professional Studies will host undergraduate information sessions for prospective adult students Wednesday, Aug. 6, in an online session from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 19, from 5:45 to 7 p.m. in Cudahy 414. The sessions will cover the accelerated bachelor’s degree programs, the application and admission process, financial aid options and information about the Saturday, weeknight and online course offerings.

6. Haggerty Museum holding Lunchtime Learning sessions
The Patrick & Beatrice Haggerty Museum of Art will hold three Lunchtime Learning sessions with the exhibition Biographical Landscape: The Photography of Stephen Shore, 1969-1979. Dan Johnson, Marquette’s chief photographer, will present “How to Make Pictures, Not Take Them,” from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7. James Brozek, photographer for the Marquette School of Dentistry, will present “Photography and the Work Environment” from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14. On Thursday, Aug. 21, Wally Mason, director of the Haggerty Museum of Art, will present a gallery talk and walk-through of the Shore exhibition from noon to 1 p.m.

7. Raynor Memorial Libraries posts summer reading newsletter
The July issue of the Raynor Memorial Libraries’ summer reading newsletter, Ex Libris, has been posted online, highlighting contemporary fiction and nonfiction books recommended by library staff.
The libraries have also posted a resource guide for Ann Patchett’s novel Run, the First-Year Reading Program selection. Copies of Run are available in Raynor Library’s Browsing Collection.
8. Car wash to benefit student dental association conference attendees
The American Student Dental Association of Marquette’s School of Dentistry will hold a car wash Wednesday, July 30, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in the dental school parking lot. Proceeds benefit ASDA members attending the ASDA National Meeting in Phoenix, Aug. 28-31.
9. Marquette sponsoring Hank Aaron Trail run/walk
Marquette University, through the Office of Public Affairs, is cosponsoring the 9th Annual Hank Aaron State Trail 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Aug. 9, with a guest appearance from baseball Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron. The trail runs through the Menomonee Valley. Marquette University is a member of the Menomonee Valley Business Association/Menomonee Valley Partners.
Cost is $17 before Aug. 2, $20 Aug. 3-8 and $22 on race day. The run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m. Awards, prizes, entertainment and refreshments will be available at 10 a.m. Register through active.com.
In another celebration of the Menomonee Valley, Milwaukee Public Library’s Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., is showing an exhibit of historic photos, books, articles, memorabilia and more chronicling the Menomonee Valley. Eddee Daniel will give a talk/book signing at the library on Wednesday, Aug. 27, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for his new book Urban Wilderness.

10. National Night Out features food, entertainment
The Milwaukee Police Department District 3 will host a National Night Out 2008 Tailgate Event on Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the parking lot between W. Lisbon Ave., W. North Ave. and N. 49th St., across from District 3 Station. The event will include give-aways for children, food, entertainment, speakers and safety displays from city and community groups.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for local anti-crime efforts, and strengthen police-community partnerships. Marquette University is part of District 3.
11. Marquette Interchange highlights for the week of July 28
• Numerous north and south portions of the interchange, exit ramps and entrance ramps will be closed on weeknights and this weekend through Aug. 3. Closings will vary due to weather. Go online for the most current information.
• Traffic on St. Paul Avenue between 5th and 13th streets will be restricted for the next several months due to water main work.• The final east/west alignment of the new interchange is complete. All east/west through lanes are now open.
