1. College of Education launches new blog

The College of Education has launched a new blog, The Marquette Educator, written primarily by Dr. Bill Henk, dean of the college, which serves as a forum on education issues that range from serious to funny.  
 
The dean’s first post told the story of how he escaped from kindergarten, and a follow-up post explored issues surrounding Milwaukee’s search for a new superintendent of public schools.
 
Contributors from the field of education, including College of Education faculty, will guest blog as well. Readers are encouraged to respond.
 
“Local, state and national education topics will be covered with the hope of informing, entertaining and, most of all, engaging readers,” Henk said.

2. Marquette ranks 84th nationally

Marquette University ranks 84th among the top national universities in the 2010 edition of America's Best Colleges, released Thursday by U.S. News & World Report. Marquette was listed among 262 U.S. universities that offer undergraduate majors as well as master's and doctoral degrees, the premier category of institutions ranked by the publication.
 
The university was again named among the “A+ Options for B Students” and was one of only 31 universities recognized for service learning under “Programs to Look For.” Additionally, Marquette was one of 50 universities recognized in the “Great Schools, Great Prices” category, which relates a school’s academic quality, as indicated by its 2010 U.S. News ranking, to the 2008–2009 academic year net cost of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based financial aid.

The College of Business Administration was ranked 83rd among the best national undergraduate business programs.

3. Adjust parking for convenience of students moving in

As the Marquette community welcomes students for the 2009-10 academic year, employees are asked to adjust their parking locations for the convenience of students moving in:

• Wednesday, Aug. 26, Structure 1 parkers should relocate to levels four, five or six of the 16th Street Structure.   

• Wednesday, Aug. 26, Lot D, F, R, RR and Structure 2 parkers should relocate to levels four, five, six or seven of the Wells Street Structure.

• Friday, Aug. 28, Lot D, F, R, RR and Structure 2 parkers should again use the top four levels of the Wells Street Structure.

• Lot S parkers behind the School of Dentistry are reminded that their lot will be used for overflow parking, and the lot will likely be more congested.

4. Beta Alpha Psi Chapter wins Gold Challenge

Marquette’s Beta Alpha Psi chapter, its student honorary accounting society, was recently recognized as a Gold Challenge winner — one of 14 chapters nationwide selected for the honor.

Chapters are named Superior Chapters if they meet participation requirements at the college, regional and national level. This year, BAP also recognized chapters that go beyond what is required to become a Superior Chapter through a Gold Challenge. To be eligible, chapters were required to submit a 10-minute video presentation demonstrating why their chapter deserved the award. 

Marquette’s video focused on:
• Building relationships with peers and professionals
• Recognizing and rewarding scholastic success
• Instilling commitment to lifelong professional development
• Developing leadership skills
• Giving back to the community through service
• Encouraging ethical behavior

Marquette’s chapter has received the Superior Chapter distinction for the past 21 consecutive years. Of the 265 active chapters in 2009, 134 were recognized as Superior Chapters.

5. Women’s book club inviting new attendees

Marquette’s campus women's book group invites new members to attend its monthly discussions. Originally formed as an initiative of the Women's Studies minor, the group reads primarily contemporary fiction, but selects members' suggestions including classics and nonfiction. Recent books include Home, Olive Kitteridge, The 19th Wife, Mao's Last Dancer and Persepolis. The book for Sept. 8 is One Thousand White Women, by Jim Fergus.

The group meets at noon on the second Tuesday of each month.
