Marquette’s chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society has been named an "Honor Chapter" for its outstanding activities in 2008-09, the 17th consecutive year it has received this distinction.
Each May, all 564 chapters of Sigma Delta Pi are asked to submit an annual report detailing their activities and projects from the academic year. Based on these reports, the National Executive Committee chooses about 10 "Honor Chapters" annually. Some of SDP’s activities last year included:
• holding English-as-a-second-language sessions at St. Adalbert's Catholic Church.
• fund-raising for St. Adalbert's.
• discussing foreign language and culture learning experiences at the first-ever Polyglot Café event.
• screening two movies in Spanish per year.
Dr. Germán Carrillo, associate professor of Spanish, serves as Marquette's chapter adviser.

The Loyola University New Orleans Class of 2009 will dedicate a sculptural bench to Loyola on Saturday, Aug. 29, to pay tribute to 637 colleges that took in displaced Loyola students in the semester following Hurricane Katrina.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Marquette enrolled 67 students from New Orleans-area schools. Five have since graduated from Marquette, five remain enrolled at Marquette and many of the others returned to their home institutions or enrolled elsewhere the following year.
“We will always remember your generosity and kindness in response to this unprecedented event in our city's history,” said Cathy Simoneaux, director of scholarships and financial aid at Loyola University New Orleans, about those 637 schools.
The Lunda Room, second floor of Alumni Memorial Union, will begin its fall menu Monday, Aug. 31, including a BLT panini; roasted vegetable and goat cheese Napoleon; seafood enchiladas and Friday fish fry.

Members of the Marquette community are reminded to take shelter immediately when the local emergency sirens sound for severe weather. A tornado warning means that a tornado is in the area and everyone should take immediate shelter, preferably in a basement or below-ground location.
A tornado watch means that conditions are right for a tornado. Continue normal activities but monitor the situation.
