2. McNair Scholars holding undergraduate research symposium

Undergraduate students participating in the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program this summer will present their research at the 19th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on Wednesday, July 22, and Thursday, July 23. Poster presentations will be held Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in AMU 163. Oral presentations Thursday will be held from 2 p.m. to 3:40 p.m. in Cudahy 001, 131, 137 and 143.

A reception will follow Thursday’s oral presentations in the Cudahy Hall Atrium until 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

3. Undergraduate students presenting biomedical research

The College of Health Sciences Biomedical Sciences Summer Research Program for undergraduate students will hold its annual student poster presentation Friday, July 24, noon to 3 p.m. in the atrium outside of Cramer 087. This year 28 Marquette students participated in the competitive 10-week program during which they conducted research in the laboratories of 16 faculty mentors in biomedical sciences, clinical laboratory science, physical therapy and exercise science. The session will include an address by Dr. William Cullinan, dean of the College of Health Sciences. Refreshments will be provided.

4. Author and journalist Frank Aukofer to appear at book signing

Marquette University Press and the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication will host a book signing with Frank Aukofer, author of Never a Slow Day – Adventures of a 20th Century Newspaper Reporter, Monday, July 27, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in AMU 227.


Aukofer, retired Washington bureau chief of the Milwaukee Journal and its successor, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, maintained a collection of the events he's witnessed and the people he's written about while covering many of the historic events of the second half of the 20th century. Aukofer’s book describes the life of a top political reporter covering the often-dramatic everyday occurrences of people and events before and during their ascension to becoming the topics of major news coverage.

Copies will be available for purchase at the event.

5. Early registration for peace and justice conference ends July 31

The early registration fee for the Peace and Justice Studies Association conference at Marquette, “Exploring the Power of Nonviolence," runs through Thursday, July 31.

This year’s program includes Sister Helen Prejean, Jonathan Schell, Will Allen, 10 other major speakers, workshops and 80 concurrent sessions. Also featured will be musical group Emma's Revolution, called "the epitome of great political music" by Sing Out!.

6. Library books must be renewed

All books checked out from Raynor Memorial Library that are due Aug. 8, 2009, and have not been already renewed or returned need to be renewed. The new due date will be Aug. 14, 2010.

To renew items:
• Go to the Raynor Memorial Libraries homepage
• Under the "Services" column select “Your library record.”
• Enter first and last name and Marquette Card Barcode No. (14 digits) from your MUID.  
• Select "Items currently Checked Out."
• Select the “Renew All” button to renew all checked-out items.
OR
• Renew individual titles by selecting the “Renew” button in front of each book.
• After selecting all the individual titles, click on "Renew selected items.”

After Sept. 8, customers will have to bring the books to the library for renewal.  

If you have one or more authorized assistants, call the Circulation Department at 8-7555 to renew any material checked out to those records. If an assistant will no longer be working with you, notify circulation to transfer the materials to your personal record.
