1. Peace Like a River author visiting AMUW book club; guide available

Leif Enger, the author of Peace Like a River, will participate in an Association of Marquette University Women Fall Book Club discussion Thursday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Raynor Library Beaumier Suites. The club is reading Peace Like a River, the 2010 First Year Reading Program selection, and Enger is visiting campus to meet with incoming freshmen. Raynor Memorial Libraries have also posted a resource guide for Peace Like a River. The guide includes audio interviews with the author, book reviews and guides, and links to books and articles for exploring themes in the book.

2. Marquette to receive six awards at next week’s JAA conference

Marquette University will receive six of the 15 awards presented at the Jesuit Advancement Administrators conference at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass., July 11-13. Marquette placed first, second and third in the “Publications” category, as well as first in “Special Events.” JAA is a group within the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities representing those who work in development, alumni relations, donor relations, donor operations, marketing and communications, and public affairs at the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States.

JAA Awards that will be presented to Marquette are:

Publications category
• Gold, “Centennial Celebration of Women, Marquette Magazine, Fall 2009”
• Silver, “Centennial Celebration of Women, Marquette Magazine Supplement
• Bronze, Engineer Magazine, the 2009 alumni magazine for the College of Engineering

Special Events category
• Gold, “Inaugural Endowed Scholarship Luncheon,” an event to thank benefactors who have established scholarships at Marquette and connect them with their students.
• Bronze, “Centennial Celebration of Women at Marquette”

Programs category
• Bronze, “2009 Student Thank You Program,” an initiative that gives students an opportunity to show their gratitude to donors through thank you letters

Marquette also recently received a 2010 Circle of Excellence Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. The university’s “Give Marquette” scholarship aid initiative received a bronze award in the “Fundraising Programs: Annual/Regular Giving Programs” category. One gold award, one silver and two bronzes were awarded from the 25 entries in the category.

3. Future Milwaukee application deadline extended to July 16

The Future Milwaukee Leadership Program has extended its application deadline to Friday, July 16, for its 2010-11 class. Sessions will begin in September and run through May 2011, primarily from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every other week on Monday evenings. Tuition for Marquette employees is discounted to $300. Applications are available online.

Each year, Future Milwaukee participants work in teams to experience first-hand a deeper understanding of community issues, network with a diverse group of professionals, and work with private, public and non-profit organizations to help transform the future of Milwaukee.

4. Want to become a better public speaker?

Marquette is exploring the idea of starting a campus chapter of Toastmasters International, “a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience.” Participation gives members the opportunity to practice conducting meetings, give impromptu speeches, present prepared speeches and more — in a supportive environment. Marquette would need 20 members to charter a club this fall.

5. Al’s Run training program to be held

The Employee Wellness Program will hold an Al’s Run Training Program on Monday, July 19, from noon to 1 p.m. and again from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Raynor Beaumier Suite B/C.

The session will cover training program options for runners and walkers, proper form and gear. Nicole Hengels, certified personal trainer and a senior in the exercise science program, will present the program. Al’s Run is Saturday morning, Oct. 9, and begins on the Marquette campus.

6. Employee discount available for girls’ basketball camp

Marquette Women's Basketball will hold its annual Summer Day Camp for girls entering first through eighth grades Monday, Aug. 2, through Friday, Aug. 6. The camp provides individual instruction from Marquette coaches and a competitive atmosphere.

7. Farmers’ market is destination of Wednesday wellness walk

The Employee Wellness Program is leading a walk to the Westown Farmer’s Market every Wednesday this summer, weather permitting, beginning at noon in front of Zilber Hall. The market is located on Michigan Street between Third and Fourth streets — approximately a 10-minute walk one-way. An Employee Wellness representative leads the walk down and participants are welcome to walk back at their convenience. The farmers’ market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday throughout the summer. For more information, contact Mandi Richter, wellness coordinator, at 8-4581.

Marquette is a sponsor of the farmers’ market and the free River Rhythms concert series, which is held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at Père Marquette Park.
