1. Three water research projects receive IUCRC grants

Three Marquette University research projects were among seven chosen to receive funding by the industry members of the National Science Foundation’s Industry/University Cooperative Research Center on water technology, in conjunction with UW-Milwaukee.

The goal of the new center is to spur local economic growth by combining the engineering research expertise at Marquette and UWM with industry needs involving water equipment, policy and technology.

The Marquette research projects awarded funding are:

“Chemical Sensors for Monitoring Contaminants in Aqueous Environments” by Dr. Fabien Josse, professor of electrical and computer engineering. These devices will use chemically modified surfaces, which show stability in water, to achieve low detection limits with class specificity.

“Grey-water assessment” by Drs. Dan Zitomer, professor of civil and environmental engineering; Vladimir Novotny, professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering; and Michael Switzenbaum, executive associate dean of engineering. This project will involve an assessment of the current state of grey-water management, including characterization of grey-water, current regulations, current technologies used as well as technology gaps.

“Micro-Calorimeter Array for Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring” by Dr. Chung Hoon Lee, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering. Thermal properties of bio/chemical molecules are unique. This project will examine the use of nanoscale engineering to measure the effect of heat on bio/chemical molecules. Using signal processors to detect hazardous molecular species is a key to real-time water quality monitoring.

2. Free gift, Rec Sports admission for employees on Wednesday

Dr. John Pauly, provost, will lead a walk around the Marquette Mile for National Employee Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, May 19, beginning in front of Zilber Hall at noon. All participants will receive a gift in recognition of Marquette’s designation as a Well Workplace. Healthy refreshments will be provided by Sodexo. Contact Mandi Richter, wellness coordinator, at 8-4581 to register.

The Department of Recreational Sports will also offer free admission to the Rec Center and Rec Plex on May 19.

3. Receptions for Drs. Margaret Bloom and William Wiener this week

Dr. John Pauly, provost, and the Office of the Provost will host receptions honoring Dr. William Wiener and Dr. Marquette Bloom on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, next week. Receptions will take place from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Zilber Hall fourth floor common area, with the program beginning at 3:30 p.m.

The reception for Wiener, vice provost for research and dean of the Graduate School, will be Wednesday, May 19. The reception for Bloom, vice provost for undergraduate programs and teaching, will be Thursday, May 20.

Bloom and Wiener are stepping down from their positions at the end of the 2009-2010 academic year. RSVP to University Special Events at 8-7431.

4. Buzz’s BBQ is June 23

The Marquette community is invited to a Texas-style BBQ hosted by men’s basketball head coach Buzz Williams, Wednesday, June 23, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Central Mall. Cost is $10 per person for attendees age 3 and older.

The annual event has drawn more than 2,000 students, alumni, parents and friends in each of the past two years.

5. Purchasing Department holding supplier fair

The Purchasing Department will host a supplier fair on Thursday, May 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the AMU Ballroom. Attendees can meet preferred suppliers and learn about their products and services.  

Food and door prizes will be provided.

6. Annual employee golf outing is June 10

Spots are still open for the annual faculty, staff and administrator golf outing Thursday, June 10, at Brookfield Hills Golf Course. The $31 cost includes 18 holes of golf, food, door prizes and awards. Participants will have the option of tee times between 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The registration deadline is Monday, May 24. Space is limited. To donate a door prize contact Anne Pufahl, assistant director of recreational sports, at 8-1558.

7. eMarq upgrade Wednesday

IT Services will upgrade eMarq on Wednesday, May 19, resulting in improvements to Outlook Web Access. These improvements include a faster reading experience (open, delete, mark as read and categorize), an improved user interface and the availability of OWA themes.

This upgrade does not require an outage. However, mobile device users you may need to reset their sync profile after the upgrade.

8. Law School to hold information session

The Law School will host an information session for prospective students Friday, May 21, at 11:45 a.m. in Sensenbrenner 239. The session will provide information about admissions, financial aid, curriculum and intellectual and student life. A brief tour of the Law School will be led by a current law student. No registration is necessary.

9. News Briefs begins weekly schedule next week

Beginning next week, Monday, May 24, the News Briefs e-newsletter will begin its once-a-week summer publication schedule. The Thursday edition won’t return until fall semester. The deadline to submit articles for Monday publication remains at noon on Fridays.
