1. Little Rock Nine simulcast tickets available

Marquette will confer the Père Marquette Discovery Award, the university’s highest honor, on the Little Rock Nine in a special ceremony Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 4 p.m. in the Varsity Theatre. Seven of the nine members of the Little Rock Nine are expected to attend the awards ceremony.

Tickets for a simulcast in the Weasler Auditorium are now available to the general public. Individuals can pick up two tickets from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. weekdays and 2 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the AMU Brooks Lounge while supplies last. Those joining the simulcast are also invited to attend the general reception immediately following the Père Marquette Discovery Award Ceremony in the AMU Monaghan Ballroom. Members of the Little Rock Nine will attend.

Tickets for the Varsity Theatre are no longer available.

Following presentation of the Discovery Award Medal, Mike Gousha, distinguished fellow in law and public policy, will interview the Little Rock Nine. Marquette community members can submit questions that may be used at the question and answer portion of the awards conferral.   

As courageous teenagers, the Little Rock Nine dared to challenge racial segregation in public schools by enrolling at the all-white Central High School in 1957. They became an integral part of the fight for equal opportunity in American education.

2. Diverse alumnae to share Marquette experiences

Alumnae from diverse backgrounds will reflect on the challenges, successes and opportunities experienced during and after their years at Marquette at “Marquette Opening Doors to Opportunity” Thursday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m. in the AMU Monaghan Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

3. RSVP for "Water and People" conference by Feb. 12

“Water and People” will be the topic of the Law School’s 2010 Public Service Conference Friday, Feb. 26, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the AMU ballrooms.

Cameron Davis, senior adviser to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator for Great Lakes Restoration, will deliver the lunchtime keynote address, “How to Rehabilitate the Great Lakes as a Global Resource.” Davis has worked for more than two decades to develop and implement water quality and quantity policies in the Great Lakes basin.

The conference will also feature presentations on water ethics by Curt Meine with Center for Humans and Nature, and on the false dichotomy between economic development and environmental protection by Todd Ambs, water division administrator for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Marquette employees and students can attend for free. Cost is $40 for all others. Register by Friday, Feb. 12.

4. Marburg lecture to address women’s status in society

Dr. Marianne Ferber, professor emeritus of economics at the University of Illinois, will present  “Determinants of Women’s Status in Society” Friday, Feb. 12, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Weasler Auditorium. The presentation, which is the 2010 Marburg Lecture, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

5. "Women Living the Marquette Mission" to be presented

The College of Nursing and the women’s basketball team will sponsor a Centennial Celebration of Women pre-game panel presentation, “Women Living the Marquette Mission,” at noon Saturday, Feb. 13, at the AMU Sports Annex. Dr. Margaret Callahan, dean of nursing, will moderate a panel discussion with Tommi Thompson, Bus Ad ’00, finance and operations director of the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation; Dr. Mary Ann Lough, director of the Marquette Clinic for Women & Children; and Liz Heth, Burke Scholar and volunteer at the Marquette Clinic for Women & Children. The $10 cost includes a box lunch and a ticket to the women’s game against Providence at 2 p.m. Call 8-7697 to register.

6. Funeral for former dean of engineering is tomorrow

The visitation for Dr. Arthur Moeller, former dean of engineering and vice president for academic affairs, will be today, Feb. 4, at Becker Ritter Funeral Home, 14075 W. North Ave., Brookfield, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Another visitation will be held tomorrow, Feb. 5, at San Camillo Chapel, 10200 W. Blue Mound Road, Wauwatosa, from 9 a.m. until the Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m.

Moeller passed away Jan. 31.

Moeller earned degrees in mathematics and electrical engineering from Western Reserve University, Michigan State University and Marquette University and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin. He joined the Marquette faculty in 1944.

He received many honors and awards for his teaching and service, including the Marquette University Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. At the time of his death he held the title of professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marquette University for the Arthur C. Moeller Scholarship Endowment for Academic Distinction, c/o University Advancement, Zilber Hall.

7. Electrical engineering colloquium Tuesday

Dr. Aaron Zhou, senior controls engineer at Magnetek, Menomonee Falls, will present “Renewable energy control-photovoltaic and wind power systems” for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering colloquium Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m. in Olin Engineering 120.

8. Career fair prep and workshop precedes career fair

Career Services will host a career fair prep and resume writing workshop Monday, Feb. 8, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in AMU 227. The workshop will offer tips on how to present yourself at the Workforce Career Fair on Thursday, Feb. 18, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the AMU Ballrooms. At the fair, employers will be hiring for internships and full-time positions in business, communication, government, nonprofit, engineering and computer science. Pizza will be served at the workshop.

9. Free suicide prevention training scheduled

The Counseling Center is offering free QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) suicide prevention training Thursday, Feb. 11, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in AMU 252. The training is a nationally recognized program that teaches attendees how to ask someone if he/she is suicidal and how to persuade that individual to accept a referral for counseling. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students and the most preventable one.

10. College of Professional Studies holding information session

The College of Professional Studies will host an accelerated undergraduate degree information session for prospective adult students Thursday, Feb. 11, from 5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m., in Cudahy 414. The session will cover bachelor's degree programs and information about the Saturday, weeknight and selected online course options; the accelerated eight-week sessions from September through May; the application and admission process; and financial aid options. Register online.

The next eight-week session begins March 15.

11. Rec Sports offering free Zumba, pilates

The Department of Recreational Sports is offering free Friday fitness classes all semester. A free Pilates class will take place at 1 p.m. and a free Zumba class at 4 p.m. at the Helfaer Recreation Center tomorrow, Feb. 5.

12. "Dating doctor" providing relationship advice

Dave Coleman, “the dating doctor,” will offer dating and healthy relationships advice through a comic lens tomorrow, Feb. 5, at 9 p.m. in the Weasler Auditorium. The movie Couples Retreat will follow. Refreshments will be served at this free event.

13. Free food at Lebanese Night

International student Mohammad ElBsat and the Office of International Education will host the fourth annual Lebanese night Friday, Feb 5, at 6:30 p.m. in AMU 227. The event will include free Lebanese food, dancing and a re-enactment of an authentic Lebanese wedding

14. Relay for Life kicks off Monday

The Relay for Life Spring Kickoff meeting, with information about Relay for Life, how to start a team or volunteer in the community, will be held Monday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in Cramer 087.

Relay for Life will take place April 24-25 on Marquette’s Central Mall. Participants will participate in games and activities while walking or running around a track to raise funds to fight cancer.

15. Campus Renew and "Muslim learns to fly" next week

Group meetings of Campus Renew, a small, Christian community experience that meets to reflect upon the Sunday Scriptures, share faith and identify new ways to live faith, are being held weekly. An experienced group leader facilitates the process in a small group of eight to 10 participants. Sign-up by Wednesday, Feb. 10. Campus Ministry and the Muslim Student Association will host a screening of On a Wing and a Prayer: An American Muslim Learns to Fly, followed by discussion, Monday, Feb. 8, from noon to 2 p.m. in AMU 407. The movie follows Monem Salem, a Pakistani-American portfolio manager, as he follows his dream of becoming a pilot. This true-life story chronicles the peaks and valleys of this journey — from nervousness on the part of his wife to suspicion from the FBI.

16. Chili entries needed to benefit HIV/AIDS awareness

Watumishi, an HIV/AIDS awareness student organization, is requesting chili entries for an all-you-can-eat chili cook-off at the Haggerty Museum of Art, Wednesday, Feb. 10, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Attendees can enjoy live music, sample varieties of chili and vote for their favorite recipe. A $5 entrance fee will be collected at the door.
