1. Haglund and Sorby receive Fulbright awards

Drs. Kristin Haglund and Angela Sorby have received awards from the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program to continue their scholarship abroad. Haglund, associate professor of nursing, will travel to England to research sexual activity of adolescents. Sorby, associate professor of English, will teach English literature to university students in China.

In spring 2011 Haglund will lecture and conduct research at The School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, for her project, “The Social & Cultural Contexts of Alcohol Use and Subsequent Sexual Involvement among Adolescents and Young Adults.” She will study the behaviors of youths age 14 to 21 to understand their “trajectory” of alcohol use and sexual involvement from early adolescence to young adulthood.

Sorby will teach two English literature courses on "The Living American Canon" at Xiamen University in Fujian Province, China, during spring semester 2011. Her premise is that the body of classic American literature is under constant revision by readers and that the field of literature is moving away from a nationalist approach to one that addresses how readers and cultures connect across borders.

2. Emeritus status conferred upon Bausch, Jaskolski, Bates, Duffy and Schmitt

Emeritus status has been conferred upon five Marquette individuals:
 
• Dr. Thomas Bausch, dean emeritus of business administration
• Dr. Stanley Jaskolski, dean emeritus of engineering
• Dr. Milton Bates, professor emeritus of English
• Dr. Edward Duffy, associate professor emeritus of English
• Dr. John Schmitt, associate professor emeritus of theology

The rank of emeritus may be conferred upon a retiring tenured faculty member or a retiring academic administrator whom the university designates in recognition of the sustained high quality performance shown throughout his/her career. In the case of faculty, this may be demonstrated through sustained, meritorious performance in teaching, scholarship and service. In the case of retiring administrators (dean or above with faculty rank and tenure), sustained quality in the areas of leadership and administrative contributions over a substantial period of time is required.

3. University purchases property to house maintenance facility

The university has purchased a property located at 26th and Clybourn for use as a grounds maintenance facility.

The property includes a 20,000-square-foot building that will enable the Department of Facilities Services to store vehicles and equipment inside and do routine maintenance on small equipment such as lawn mowers and snow blowers. Two compactors will be located on the site to service campus trash and recycling collection. The paved surface area of the property will provide parking for university vehicles. The grounds operations will shift to the site over the next few months. 

The property, previously owned by 2601 Investments LLC, was leased to Fabco Industries but has been vacated.

Art Scheuber, vice president for administration, said the facility is a significant improvement over the current service garage located at 17th and Clybourn. “This property offers us advantages from both from an aesthetic and a functional point of view,” he said.

Funding for the purchase came from the university’s capital reserves budget.

4. Registration for Women’s Centennial Brunch opens today

The year-long Centennial Celebration of Women at Marquette will culminate with a Women’s Centennial Brunch at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 25, in the AMU Monaghan Ballroom in conjunction with Alumni Reunion Weekend. President Robert A. Wild, S.J., will speak at the brunch on the legacy the celebration has created and the university’s reinvigorated commitment to providing access to higher education for all deserving students. The brunch is open to the Marquette community. Registration begins today, June 1. Cost is $20 per person.

A 9 a.m. Mass at Church of the Gesu will precede the brunch. Rev. Fred Zagone, S.J., assistant to the vice president in university advancement, will be the celebrant.

5. Retirement reception for Dr. Thomas Bausch is June 15

Dr. Linda Salchenberger, James H. Keyes Dean of Business Administration, will host a retirement reception for Dr. Thomas Bausch, dean emeritus and professor of business administration, Tuesday, June 15, in the AMU Lunda Room. The reception will begin at 3:30 p.m. and the program at 4 p.m. RSVP by Tuesday, June 8, to University Special Events at 8-7431.

6. Update personal contact information in university records

All students are strongly encouraged to update their personal contact information via CheckMarq. The university needs an updated address and telephone number (preferably a mobile number) for each student. This information is used by university staff to contact students in emergencies and for vital university business.

Students should log on to CheckMarq, scroll to the “Personal Information” section and update their information by Saturday, June 19, and continue to do so whenever there is a change of address or phone number.

7. Spirit Shop holding sale through June 12

The Spirit Shop is holding a “Pre-Inventory Sale” through Saturday, June 12. Already-reduced clearance merchandise will be reduced an additional 60 percent.

8. Marquette team participating in UPAF Ride for the Arts

The Department of Public Safety is coordinating a Marquette team in UPAF’s 30th Annual Ride for the Arts on Sunday, June 6, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. All members of the Marquette community and their friends and family are invited to join the Marquette team.

Cost is $35 for adults and $25 for those age 10 and younger. Distances are 5, 12, 25, 43, 65 and 75 miles. The start and finish lines are at the Summerfest Grounds.

Register online or by calling 414-276-7433. To register for the Marquette team online, register as “a member of a team.” Select “Marquette Public Safety,” use the password “Marquette1” and then wear Marquette apparel on the ride.

9. Summer Basketball Camps begin June 14

Marquette Summer Basketball Camps will be held June 14-18, June 21-25 and July 26-30. Camps for boys from kindergarten through high school run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Al McGuire Center.

Activities include passing, shooting, ball-handling and individual instruction, as well as free throw, hotshot and dunk contests. Awards for “Camper of the Day,” “Best Defensive Player” and others will also be given. Campers receive a camp jersey, daily give-away and lunch.

Cost is $250 per session. Register online. Space is limited.

10. Swimming lessons begin June 7

The Rec Plex is offering a Learn to Swim Program sponsored by the American Red Cross June 7-30. The program is segmented into six levels, in addition to the Tiny Tots/Wee Folks program. Call John Kratzer, general manager of the Rec Plex, at 8-7778 for more information.

11. Annual notification of FERPA rights

Marquette University is required by federal law to notify all students of their FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) rights at the beginning of each term.

12. Walkway north of Rec Center is closed

The walkway connecting 16th and 17th streets, north of the Helfaer Tennis & Recreation Center and south of the Discovery Learning Center construction site, is closed beginning today, June 1. Alternate routes are north to Wisconsin Avenue and south to Clybourn Avenue.

Site work to re-build Michigan Street between 16th and 17th streets is scheduled to be completed Aug. 15.
