The all-university Christmas celebration for students, faculty and staff is Wednesday, Dec. 14, from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the second floor of the AMU. This celebration will have Christmas treats, hot chocolate, festive music and lots of holiday cheer.
Applications and nominations are being sought for the position of director of the University Core of Common Studies from summer 2012 to spring 2015. This half-time, 12-month temporary position has direct responsibility for the leadership of the core curriculum and core learning outcome assessment, reporting to the vice provost for undergraduate programs and teaching.
Responsibilities include:
• serving as non-voting chair of the Core Curriculum Review Committee and coordinating the work of the CCRC in the development, maintenance, assessment and evaluation of the core;
• serving as the program assessment leader for the core, and as an ex-officio member of the University Assessment Committee; and collecting, aggregating and evaluating core learning outcome assessments;
• potentially attending national meetings about general education and assessment as a representative of the university;
• making national presentations on the core and participating in external grant applications to fund CCRC initiatives.

Faculty members interested in integrating Service Learning into their courses for Spring 2012 should contact Kim Jensen Bohat, director of the Service Learning Program, at 8-0250 by Friday, Dec. 16.
The Service Learning Program, as part of the Center for Teaching and Learning, offers faculty assistance with developing an experiential learning project; setting up community placements and developing partnerships; assessing learning; developing community-based research; and facilitating critical reflection.
Service Learning staff is available to meet with faculty interested in learning more about the pedagogy of service learning and how service learning can be used as a high impact practice in the classroom.
The Ott Memorial Writing Center conducted its 1,000th appointment of the semester Monday, Dec. 5.
The center has undergraduate and graduate tutors available to meet with any writer at any stage of the writing process. Writers interested in scheduling an appointment can stop by the center on the second floor of Raynor Library, by calling 8-5542 or by going online. Tutors will be available during the first three days of final exams.

The Libraries’ Department of Archives and Special Collections has prepared an exhibit of selected inaugural greetings and congratulations sent to Father Pilarz on the second floor of the AMU. The exhibit contains certificates, proclamations, the presidential mace and selected photos from the Sept. 22 and 23 inaugural events. The exhibit runs through Tuesday, Dec. 13.

The Center for Peacemaking is offering $200 to $2,000 grants for full-time Marquette students to explore the power of nonviolence. Students are encouraged to develop a proposal in which they will work independently or with existing peacemaking and/or development organizations and submit the proposals by Friday, Feb. 17.

Registration is now open for the Graduate School’s January 2012 Dissertation Boot Camp. DBC will be Monday, Jan. 9, through Friday, Jan. 13, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lower level of Raynor Library.
This boot camp offers a dedicated time and location for Ph.D. students to come together and work toward the completion of their dissertations, and connect with other doctoral students. Faculty facilitators will be available throughout the week to help monitor the progress and offer suggestions.
