1. RSVP deadline for Father Wild tribute event is tomorrow

The deadline to RSVP for the Campus Tribute in Honor of President Robert A. Wild, S.J., is tomorrow, May 10. The event will take place Tuesday, May 17, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the AMU Monaghan Ballroom, with the program beginning at 3:30 p.m. Father Wild will retire this summer after 15 years as Marquette president. Invitations from Senior Vice President Greg Kliebhan and Provost John Pauly were sent to employees in April.

2. New Folks’ Convocation to be held Aug. 22

The offices of Mission and Ministry, the Provost and the Senior Vice President will sponsor New Folks’ Convocation, the annual, university-wide orientation for all new employees, Monday, Aug. 22. The convocation is for all university faculty members, staff and administrators hired since Aug. 23, 2010. The purpose is to offer new employees a warm welcome to Marquette, a sense of collegiality with others at the university and provide a clearer understanding of the Catholic and Jesuit tradition that characterizes Marquette University.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude with a reception, hosted by the Marquette Jesuit Community, ending by 4 p.m. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

New employees and their supervisors will receive a formal invitation closer to the event.

3. DPS recognizing 13 with Citizen Merit Awards

The Department of Public Safety will express its gratitude to 13 campus community members for their efforts in keeping the Marquette community safe by presenting its Citizen Merit Awards last week. The awards will be presented to members of the Marquette community whose actions display care and concern for others and contribute to the safety and security of the greater community Friday, May 13, at 2 p.m. in the Eckstein Hall Appellate Courtroom.

2010-11 Citizen Merit Award Recipients are:

Justin Foo and Edward Haberkorn (seniors in the College of Engineering) and Angus Whitmore (junior, College of Business Administration) helped detain a suspect who had removed money from the pocket of a wheelchair-bound victim.

David Check (junior, College of Engineering), Andrew Huftalin (sophomore, College of Engineering) and Paul Monson (graduate student, Klingler College of Arts and Sciences) followed a group of individuals who battered a citizen, and contacted DPS, resulting in the apprehension of the suspects.

Felicia Jones (custodian II, Facility Services) contacted DPS about a suspicious person in Johnston Hall she believed was carrying stolen supplies, resulting in the apprehension of the suspect.

Conor Flaherty (junior, Klingler College of Arts and Sciences) disrupted a suspicious individual he saw follow a female student into the lobby of her off-campus apartment building and flagged down a DPS squad, resulting in the arrest of the suspect.

Dr. Patrick Doyle (cataloger/philosophy collection development librarian) contacted DPS about three individuals looking at parked bicycles, resulting in the identification of the suspects, all of whom possessed criminal records.

Nicholas Williams (senior in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences) reported to DPS a suspicious individual loitering in his off-campus apartment building. The suspect, who was in possession of burglary tools and drug paraphernalia, was arrested.

Joseph Sitkowski (junior, Diederich College of Communication) verbally addressed a suspicious individual attempting to access vehicles, and contacted DPS, resulting in the suspect being taken into custody.

Christine Hansen (junior in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences) and Erin Downey (freshman, College of Health Sciences) reported to DPS a suspicious person whom Hansen observed removing a student’s laptop computer from a study area in Cudahy Hall, leading to DPS locating and detaining the suspect.

4. Student teams awarded $1,000 each for social venture projects

Marquette student teams have been awarded $1,000 each in seed funding from the Ashoka Youth Venture social entrepreneurship program to launch social ventures. Student groups include:

Waterscore, which creates a web interface that provides consumers with information about water use in residential and commercial establishments. Venturers include Francisco Nava, a senior; Vivian Hoke, a junior, and Nate Conroy, a graduate student in the Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences; Lydia Bruegge, a senior, and Kimberly Campbell, a junior in the College of Business Administration; and Kirsten Nelson, a sophomore in the Diederich College of Communication.

PreMedCare.com, which establishes a network that connects aspiring health professionals (Marquette students) with citizens in the community who are in need of quality, affordable home health care. Venturers include Melissa Malloy, a sophomore in the College of Health Sciences, and Shoshauna Schmidt, a sophomore in arts and sciences.

Mommies In School, which creates an emotional and financial support system for those in the Marquette community who have been or are pregnant, or are parenting. Venturers include Madeleine Bien, a sophomore in arts and sciences, and Maria Tsikalas, a junior in communication.

For & By, which aims to bring leadership training to students often overlooked for leadership opportunities, leveraging existing resources to create an add-on curriculum that can be implemented at existing schools in rural communities abroad. Venturers include Aaron Owen, a senior in health sciences, and Natalie Campbell, a junior in the College of Education.

Ashoka’s Youth Venture program was brought to campus through collaboration with Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Student Organization and the Office of Student Development.

5. Free gift and prizes offered for May 18 walk; yoga class available

Dr. John Pauly, provost, will lead a walk around the Marquette Mile for National Employee Health and Fitness Day at noon on Wednesday, May 18, beginning and ending in front of the Rec Center (rain location is inside the Rec Center). All participants will receive a gift in recognition of Marquette being a Well Workplace. Each participant will also be given a poker card as he/she registers and will collect five cards along the route. The top poker hands win prizes, including massages, AMU gift cards and a one-year membership to the campus recreational facilities. RSVPs requested. Although the walk with Pauly begins at noon, participants can walk anytime from noon to 1:30 p.m. The Department of Recreational Sports will also offer free admission to the Rec Center and Rec Plex on May 18.

The Employee Wellness Program is also offering a yoga class on Wednesdays from May 18 to July 13, from 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Rec Plex. The class, for beginners and intermediates, will cover basic yoga poses that participants can take into their everyday life. Cost is $40 for eight weeks. Mats are provided, or participants can bring their own. Register by contacting Faye Otero, human resources coordinator of training and special projects, at 8-7928. Space is limited.

Walk participants will receive a punch on their Wellness Rewards punch card, as will yoga participants for each class they attend. Every time employees attend a qualifying employee wellness program, they’re eligible to receive a punch on a Wellness Rewards Card. Employees who complete a punch card with 10 punches earn a Wellness Reward Package and entry into an annual grand prize drawing, from participating partners. Wellness Rewards Punch Cards are available at all qualifying employee wellness programs.

6. Piano sale open to Marquette community members

A large selection of used grand, baby grand and other pianos used on campus by Marquette students, as well as other keyboards, orchestral string instruments and guitars will be on sale May 27 through May 30 as part of a partnership between Marquette and the Rockley Family Foundation. Most instruments are less than a year old and include a new factory warranty and tuning. The event will be held in the Varsity Theatre.

7. Participants needed for Marquette’s International Friendship Program

Participants are needed for the Marquette International Friendship Program, which matches interested individuals and families with an incoming international student. Volunteers then meet with their student regularly over the course of the year to learn about each other’s culture while sharing leisure or family activities.

8. Faber Center joins guests at Repairers of the Breach for lunch

The Faber Center will join guests of Repairers of the Breach, a day shelter run for and by the homeless, to share a light lunch and Scripture reflection Friday, May 13, 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will leave from the Faber Center, Schroeder Complex 111, at 11:45 a.m. Transportation will be provided. 9. Law School to hold information session

The Law School will host an information session for prospective full- and part-time students Friday, May 13, in Eckstein 246, the Appellate Courtroom. The session will provide admissions and financial aid information and a panel of current students.

The session begins at 11:45 a.m. and lasts approximately one hour, followed by a brief tour. Register online.

Human Resources has discounted Six Flags Great America tickets available. General admission tickets, for those age three and older, cost $34 ($56.99 at the gate for adults and $36.99 for children under 48 inches tall). Children age 2 and under are free.
