1. Commencement weekend includes Mass, webcast and free parking

Nearly 2,400 students will participate in Marquette University’s Commencement ceremony Sunday, May 22, at 9:30 a.m. at the Bradley Center. The Baccalaureate Mass will be held Saturday, May 21, at 4:30 p.m., at the U.S. Cellular Arena.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian David McCullough will be the Commencement speaker. He will receive an honorary degree from Marquette, along with:

• Will Allen, co-founder and CEO of Growing Power
• Bill Drayton, founder of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public
• Catherine Rick, chief officer in the Office of Nursing Services for the Department of Veteran Affairs

The student address will be given by Brian Harper, of Fond du Lac, Wis., who is graduating from the Diederich College of Communication with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Harper, who minored in philosophy and Spanish, was a columnist for the Marquette Tribune during his senior year. Following graduation, he plans to join the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

Commencement will be webcast so that family and friends not in attendance can view the ceremony.

All campus parking lots will be open and free of charge over Commencement weekend, May 20-22. Gates to all lots (except Lot G) and the 16th Street and Wells Street parking structures will open Friday afternoon and will remain open through Sunday evening. 2. Seven to be added to M Club Hall of Fame

Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., president of Marquette, will join six others as inductees to the Marquette M Club Hall of Fame in a ceremony Saturday, Aug. 20. In addition to Father Wild, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will induct Brianna Dahm (cross country/track and field), Travis Diener (men’s basketball), LaVern Dilweg (football/men’s basketball/track and field), Rhegan Hyypio (women’s soccer), Tony Miller (men’s basketball) and the 1937 Cotton Bowl football team. They will join 72 other honorees enshrined in the Al McGuire Center's Walk of Champions.

"This unique group represents individuals across a broad spectrum of time and competition, but all contributed greatly to the proud tradition of Marquette Athletics," said Director of Athletics Steve Cottingham.

Father Wild, who will retire this summer after 15 years as Marquette president, oversaw tremendous growth in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, including Marquette's jump to the BIG EAST Conference. During Father Wild's tenure, more than 40 endowed athletic scholarships have been added, Marquette's athletic teams have won 21 team conference championships and 49 individual titles. Student-athletes have also earned 29 All-America honors and have maintained a graduation rate of 81 percent.

3. Buzz’s BBQ is June 29

The Marquette community is invited to a Texas-style BBQ hosted by Men’s Head Basketball Coach Buzz Williams, Wednesday, June 29, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Central Mall. Cost is $10 per person for attendees age 5 and older.

Entering its fourth summer, the annual event features Williams and current and former Marquette players, games and a Texas-style BBQ dinner.

4. Linda Davis named Wellness Champion Employee of the Year

Linda Davis, Department of Chemistry office assistant, has been selected as the Employee Wellness Program’s 2011 Wellness Champion Employee of the Year. “She has amazed her coworkers with diligence in working with a Weight Watchers class on campus by losing 65 pounds and keeping it off,” said a nominator. Davis was also commended for her positive attitude, stress management and work/life balance.

Davis has been awarded a $100 spa gift certificate for her selection as Wellness Champion.

Nominations for the 2011 Wellness Champion were solicited campuswide for individuals who exemplify a healthy Marquette employee, living a healthy lifestyle and setting a great example for healthy living. The Wellness Implementation Committee reviewed all nominations and made the final selection of the Wellness Champion.

5. Employee discount available for girls’ soccer camps

The Marquette women's soccer team will host three summer camps in June and July as part of its 2011 Summer Camp Series.

Marquette women's soccer camps offer a chance for youth athletes to receive small group instruction from Marquette women's soccer players as well as the coaching staff. A $50 Marquette employee discount is available for the Marquette Elite Camp, and a $25 Marquette employee discount is available for the Marquette Blue and Gold Futures Camp.

6. TIAA-CREF representatives available for financial counseling

TIAA-CREF consultants will be available to faculty and staff for individual and confidential financial counseling sessions from 9:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, in AMU 231, and Thursday, May 26, in AMU 233. The session can include overall financial advice, asset allocation, retirement income options, diversifying financial portfolios and learning about mutual funds, brokerage, life insurance and annuities.
