1. Scholarship awards available

Several Marquette alumni organizations offer annual scholarship awards and are seeking applications. Students who meet the criteria for these awards are encouraged to apply. In some cases, a nomination from a Marquette faculty or staff member is also required. Students receiving tuition remission or full-tuition scholarships are not eligible for these awards.

AMUW Ignatian Leadership Award — $1,000 award for a senior woman, graduating in 2012 and enrolled full-time, who excels academically and demonstrates leadership and service to the Marquette and Milwaukee communities, or her hometown community, and strives to live out the Ignatian ideals.  Faculty/staff nomination is required along with student application by Feb. 15, 2012.

Pedro Arrupe Award — $2,500 for a junior in good standing and enrolled full-time who emulates the values and ideals of Rev. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., and is involved in service in and beyond the Marquette community.  Faculty/staff nomination is required along with student application and essay by March 23, 2012.

The Association of Marquette University Women (AMUW) Scholarship — $2,500 for junior women beginning their senior year in Fall 2012 who are enrolled full-time with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.3 and demonstrate financial need. Application deadline is Feb. 15, 2012.

Ethnic Alumni Association Ralph H. Metcalfe, Sr., Scholarship – Three awards of up to $2,000 each for students of color who are enrolled full-time with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and demonstrate financial need.  At least one award will go to an Educational Opportunity Program student and one to a non-EOP student. Application deadline is Feb. 15, 2012.

2. Marquette alum James Foley to deliver Nieman Lecture

Journalist James Foley will speak about his experience as a captive in Libya at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the Alumni Memorial Union Monaghan Ballroom.

Foley, a 1996 Marquette graduate, arrived in Libya in March 2011 as a reporter for the GlobalPost to cover the growing hostilities between rebels and the regime of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. Gadhafi forces killed a fellow journalist who was traveling with Foley and apprehended him and two colleagues who were then held in a Tripoli jail for 45 days. 

Foley was set free following an international campaign spearheaded by his friends from Marquette, former colleagues at Teach For America, and family and childhood friends in New Hampshire. The campaign included an online petition that garnered nearly 35,000 signatures and a media plan that brought his captivity and eventual release to the world’s attention.

His speech, “A Conflict Correspondent’s Front-Row View of History,” is part of a lecture series sponsored by the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication. The Nieman Chair and Lecture series was endowed in honor of Lucius W. Nieman, who founded the Milwaukee Journal in 1882 at age 24 and served as the paper’s long-time editor-in-chief.

3. University mourns death of Carl Singer

Marquette University mourns the death of Carl Singer, retired vice president for business and finance, who passed away November 28.

Singer graduated from Marquette in 1953 with a degree in business administration. He joined Marquette in 1979 as assistant vice president for business and finance, and was named vice president in 1983. Singer retired from the university in 1992. In retirement, Carl served on the City of Glendale Planning Commission and on the Wisconsin State Coordinating Council for AARP. He was an avid Marquette basketball fan and long-time season ticket holder.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Carl’s name to Alexian Village of Milwaukee or Marquette University.

A memorial mass for Carl Singer will be planned for the spring. Details are forthcoming.

4. Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry to hold colloquiums

The Department of Biological Sciences will host a seminar Friday, Dec. 9, at 3:30 p.m. in Wehr Life Sciences 111. Dr. Joanne Stubbe, faculty member from the biology department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will present “Radicals: Your Life is in Their Hands.”

David H. Waldeck, distinguished professor of chemistry at University of Pittsburgh, will present “Fundamental Studies of Electron Transfer through Self-Assembled Monolayers and Its Relations to Molecular Conductance of Molecules.” This Department of Chemistry colloquium will be held Friday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m. in Todd Wehr Chemistry 121. Refreshments will be available beginning at 3:45 p.m.

5. Haggerty Museum of Art announces four new exhibits

The Haggerty Museum of Art will display four new exhibits Wednesday, Jan. 18, through Sunday, May 20, including work by Tina Barney, Philip Guston, John Stezaker and several other artists from the Mary B. Finnigan Collection.

The Europeans, a collection of photographs by Tina Barney, provides an intimate look at wealthy Europeans through the eyes of the American photographer. This exhibit will be featured in an American museum for the first time, and presents 20 works from the photographer’s travels.

Barney will present “Survey,” a lecture about her photography Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m. in Eckstein Hall. A reception will follow at 7 p.m. in the Haggerty Museum.

Inevitable Finality, The Gemini G.E.L. Prints, featuring the work of Philip Guston, presents all 25 lithographs created in the last two months of the artist’s life. As a collection, the works reveal Guston’s lifelong passion for drawing, his return to the figurative and his deep appreciation of the immediacy and liveliness inherent in drawings.

James Reid, Gemini printer, will speak about his collaborations with Guston and other artists Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m. in the Haggerty Museum.

Marriage, a collection by British conceptual artist John Stezaker, is an exhibit of nine film portraits made between 2009 and 2011. The artist mined vintage film stills and publicity shots of classic movie stars from Hollywood’s Golden Age to create a new series of collages.

Selections from The Mary B. Finnigan Collection includes select works from the permanent collection purchased with funds provided by the Mary B. Finnigan Art Endowment Fund. The exhibit includes paintings by Lovis Corinth, Jean Fautrier, Wifredo Lam, Jacob Lawrence and others. A longtime supporter and Friend of the Haggerty Museum of Art board member, Mary Finnigan gave a major gift to the museum in 1991 to establish the art endowment fund, which has brought 13 art gifts to the Haggerty over the past 20 years.

6. Registration open for Dissertation Boot Camp

Registration is now open for the Graduate School’s January 2012 Dissertation Boot Camp. DBC will be Monday, Jan. 9, through Friday, Jan. 13, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lower level of Raynor Library.

This boot camp offers a dedicated time and location for PhD students to come together and work toward the completion of their dissertations, and connect with other doctoral students. Faculty facilitators will be available throughout the week to help monitor the progress and offer suggestions.

7. Honors Program photography class to hold closing show

The Marquette Honors Program will hold their fourth annual Miksang contemplative photography class closing show Thursday, Dec. 8, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Coughlin Hall 001. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Miriam Hall, lecturer for the honors program.

8. Women's Wisdom info session to be held

Campus Ministry is holding an informational session for Women’s Wisdom Wednesday, Dec. 7, in AMU 364 at 6:15 p.m. Women’s Wisdom is a spirituality group for undergraduate women interested in sharing questions and reflections on the roles and experiences of women through discussion of readings in spirituality and theology.

9. Holy day of obligation to be celebrated

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception will be celebrated at noon and 9 p.m. in the AMU Chapel of the Holy Family Thursday, Dec. 8. Due to this holy day of obligation, there will be no Masses in the Joan of Arc Chapel on Thursday, Dec. 8. 10. Christian Fellowship to host iconographer

The Orthodox Christian Fellowship at Marquette is hosting iconographer Katherine de Shazer Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in Straz Hall 456 for “Writing Iconography.” De Shazer will discuss icons, how they are used, and the physical and spiritual process of creating them. The Ethnic Alumni Association is hosting their semi-annual “Study Break” dessert reception for students Wednesday, Dec. 14, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Lunda Room. 13. Formal Recruitment registration open for Panhellenic Association

The Panhellenic Association of Marquette University has opened registration for their Spring Formal Recruitment. Membership in a sorority provides opportunities for leadership, service and academic excellence.

Full-time undergraduate female students of Marquette, with a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and 12 completed credits or approved transfer status, are eligible for recruitment. The deadline to register is Jan. 22, 2012.

14. Almost everything gift sale to be held

The almost everything $6 gift sale will take place Monday, Dec. 5, through Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the AMU, opening daily at 10 a.m. This sale features gifts, jewelry and accessories, with 20 percent of the sale proceeds going to the Physical Therapy Faculty Student Scholarship Fund. The sale will include both licensed merchandise greater than $6 and specials under $6.

Marquette cash and credit cards are accepted. Those interested in making a contribution to the scholarship fund to assist graduate students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program can contact Kathleen Ludington, director of development for the college of health sciences, at 8-1410.
